“What impressed me,” he said with a wicked grin, “was your smoking hot body in that body-hugging blue dress, your killer legs, and those fuck-me shoes.”

She turned sober. “I’m not trying to put you off, and I know I love you. I just think there are things to be worked out.”

“Which we will do, but I want an answer Miley, and I mean to get it.”

Miley looked down and unhooked her IV. “And I want to be clean. I want a shower, please?”

“I can get the nurse,” he said, reaching for the call button.

Miley stayed his hand. “I don’t want a nurse to come in the shower with me. Please, Damon?”

“You do know I’m smart enough to know when you’re manipulating me don’t you? You’re not going to top from the bottom with me, Miley.”

“I’m not trying to. Honest. I just feel grungy, and I want to share a shower with you. Please?”

He shook his head. “You are incredibly hard to resist when you ask so sweetly.”

He’d seen her unhook herself so he put down the side of the bed and scooped her up in his arms, walking over to the bath with its large walk-in shower.

“Oooh, fancy,” she said.

“Get used to it,” he said as he set her down on her feet and stripped her naked, wrapping a plastic bandage around her IV site and making her sit on the fold-down bench.

Damon stepped out to remove his own clothes, adjusting the water as he stepped in to join her. Miley sighed as she stood and wrapped her arms around him, holding him close. She rubbed her cheek against his chest.

“You’re safe, Miley. I’ve got you.”

His strong embrace and the steady beat of his heart reassured her that he did have her, and that he would never let her go. “I know.”

“Do you?”

“I was so scared. I wasn’t scared that I would die, I was scared that I wasn’t going to get the life with you we could have. It was as if I could see it, but it was just out of reach. I want that life, Damon. I’m just afraid I’ll muck it up, or it won’t work, or you’ll figure out you made a bad choice…”

The hand that slapped her wet ass stung as an all too familiar warmth spread not only across her skin, but throughout her entire body and soul.

“I would remind you that I made the choice I wanted, and it was not a bad one.”

She smiled at him. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve never had any kind of death wish, but I’ve never really thought about it. I know before I joined Cerberus I used to wonder if anyone would miss me when I was gone. But when that staircase closed up, all I could think was, ‘I don’t want to die. I want the life I could have with you.”

“I know sweetheart. For the record I would have missed you. I would have missed having the life I know we can have together. I didn’t want to die either. I just need you to have a little faith that we can compromise and make it work.”

FITZWALLACE

The Carriage House

Charleston, South Carolina

One Week Later

Entering Damon Knox’s Charleston club, The Carriage House, Fitz had to admit it was a beautiful club. Both of his clubs reflected their surroundings as well as the history and vibe of the cities in which they were located. Knox’s club did the same. Fitz rather imagined JJ would like this place. In fact, she’d like it a lot.

He joined Damon and Miley in Damon’s office. Damon stood as he entered, extending his hand. Fitz shook it and wondered at Miley’s positioning. Fitz thought Damon was making a mistake in not having Miley dressed in club wear and sitting at his feet. It damn sure would have been where he’d have had JJ if the situation was reversed. But then again, JJ wasn’t a trained sniper and a skilled field operative.

While everyone at Cerberus was happy that Miley appeared to have found a man who could fulfill her needs both as Dom and romantic partner, King had been adamant that he didn’t want to lose her. Had King thought that Fitz did? Of course, he didn’t, but it might take a little bit of finagling to get it done. While he was pretty sure he could come to terms with Damon, he wasn’t at all sure what the ginger-haired beauty would be willing to settle for.

Fitz walked to Miley, leaned down and kissed her cheek. “You look happy, rested, and fully recovered.”
