The creature touched Romeo’s cheek, staring at him in a curious sort of way.

“Wait, no, what are you doing?” Romeo recoiled. “Hey! No touchy!”

The creature frowned.

“Look, it’s not that I’m not grateful for you rescuing me. But I’m a little paranoid since my boss just tried to kill me and I’m still not entirely convinced that you’re real.” Romeo had no idea if the creature could understand him, and talking underwater seemed like it was coming out more bubbles and warbling than actual speech.

The creature shook his head and shoved a tentacle in Romeo’s mouth.

“Mmph!” Romeo was tempted to bite, and he wiggled defiantly, trying to spit it out.

The creature nodded as if he was satisfied that Romeo couldn’t talk now, and then he turned to start swimming ahead, dragging Romeo behind him.

Romeo had a lot of questions.

He didn’t know what this creature was, why it was helping him, or where it was taking him. He hoped it wasn’t back to the damn boat, and he couldn’t be sure that the creature was really trying to save him. For all he knew, it was taking him somewhere isolated to eat him.

Talking around the tentacle was pointless, and biting didn’t seem to do any good. It was like biting into a tire, and the creature didn’t appear bothered no matter how hard he tried. He kept right on swimming, cutting through the water at incredible speeds, still carrying Romeo with him.

Romeo was getting scared, and he didn’t know what to do to get the creature to stop. Yes, the creature had been kind so far, but he wanted to know where they were going. Knowing what the creature planned to do with him would be great too, and he really wanted to know how the hell he was breathing underwater right now.

Perhaps he’d lost his mind, but Romeo decided to try something else to get the creature’s attention.

He sucked on the tentacle.

The creature skidded to an abrupt stop, turning around to stare at Romeo in surprise.

Romeo sucked the tentacle again in hopes that the creature would withdraw so he could attempt some other form of communication, but it only thrust into his mouth deeper. Judging by the new hunger in the creature’s gaze, however, Romeo realized he’d already sent a very loud and clear message.

The creature drew Romeo closer, and his hands ran up Romeo’s chest. His brow was furrowed as if he was unsure, and one of his tentacles reached around to untie the ropes holding Romeo’s wrists together. He made no other move, waiting and watching to see what Romeo would do next.

Romeo told himself it was the terror of almost drowning and some brain damage from oxygen deprivation, but he couldn’t resist reaching out to touch the creature’s chest in kind. He loved the slick feel of his skin, the firm muscle, and he sucked harder on the tentacle. He was surprised how turned on he was, and he blamed the residual adrenaline still surging through his body.

His boss had tried to kill him, he’d been rescued by a hot octo-merman-thing, and now said hot octo-merman-thing was apparently down to fuck.

Romeo would have laughed, but his mouth was full.

The creature tugged at Romeo’s shirt, pausing on a button.

Romeo showed him how to undo it, and then he watched the creature fiddle with the remaining buttons on his own.

The creature looked very proud when he pulled Romeo’s shirt off, and his hands greedily smoothed over Romeo’s chest and shoulders. While he was exploring Romeo’s torso, more of his tentacles worked at popping the button of his pants and untying the ropes around his ankles. The one in Romeo’s mouth slowly slithered out so the creature could lean in and press a soft kiss to Romeo’s lips.

Romeo was surprised by the tenderness in the kiss, and his mouth felt warm and tingly. The feeling went down into his throat, and he had the sudden urge to cough. He had to pull away from the kiss, clearing his throat.

“It’s all right,” the creature said. “That’s normal.”

“What?” Romeo blinked, startled that the creature apparently spoke perfect English and he could hear him just fine despite being underwater.

“There may be a slight warming sensation.”

“Uh… right.” Romeo cleared his throat again. “Your… kiss did that?”

“Yes. Just as the touch of my tentacles allows you to breathe underwater.” The creature smiled. “My name is Row.”

“Heh. I’m kind of a Row. Well, a Row-meo. Sorry, that’s lame.” Romeo scoffed at himself. “My name is Romeo is what I’m trying to say.”

“Hello, Romeo.” Row stroked Romeo’s chest. “I’d planned to take you back to shore, but I got the feeling you wanted to thank me for your rescue…?”
