The memory faded into darkness, and Vitruvius felt a distinct tug in his chest, as if he was being pulled into the book.

No, but it was the demon being sucked into the book.

Which meant…

“Vitruvius?” Clancy asked urgently. “Hey, what’s wrong? You’re fading out again.”

“It’s me,” Vitruvius said shakily.

“What’s you?”

“The demon.” Vitruvius shuddered. “I’m the demon.”

“Right.”

Vitruvius stared at Clancy. “Do you hear what I’m telling you? I saw more memories. I’m the demon. The young man tricked me, he… he used me. And then he bound my soul to that damn book as payment.”

“I know.” Clancy smiled warmly. “It’s okay.”

“Wait, how the hell do you know?” Vitruvius growled as he sat up, abruptly scooting away from Clancy. He missed having Clancy inside of him and the warmth of his body, but he felt betrayed that Clancy had apparently been withholding vital information from him.

“I had a pretty good feeling you weren’t human,” Clancy explained. “I can’t see you, but I can tell when it’s claws digging up my back and not fingernails. And your tail is not exactly subtle.”

“I have a fucking tail?”

“You wrapped it around my thigh while we were, uh, you know.”

“I did?”

“Pretty hard not to notice.”

Vitruvius took stock of his arms, his legs, and—oh! Well, shit. He did have a tail. It was long, thick, and he could move it very well. He had no idea how he’d managed to forget that, and he frowned, deeply troubled.

He reached up to touch his face, moving up to his forehead, and found…

Horns.

Tall, curved horns bursting out of his brow just like he’d seen in the memories.

“It’s all right,” Clancy said, offering out his hand. “Hey. You can talk to me. Please don’t fade off again.”

“How are you not afraid of me?”

“Well, you haven’t done anything to hurt me. Why should I be?”

“Because I’m a demon.”

“I’m not in the habit of judging people on what they are.Whothey are is much more important.”

“You’re insane.”

“Probably a little.” Clancy grinned. “I did just have sex with a hot demon.” He reached for Vitruvius again. “I saw you, you know. When we were together. Just for a second, a quick flash where you were real and right there, and you really are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”

Vitruvius scoffed, but he took Clancy’s hand.

“So, you were a demon, maybe trying to court that guy and get his soul, but you fell in love. You tried to save him, but he just wanted his contract or whatever, right?” Clancy squeezed Vitruvius’s hand. “Sounds like you got shafted hard.”

“Yes. Very much so.” Vitruvius frowned. “I don’t even remember his name. The man, I mean. The one I loved.”
