“That’s all right. Maybe it’ll come back. Now that you’re awake and moving around, your brain might be thawing and that’s why all these memories keep slipping out.”

“I hope they don’t.” Vitruvius flopped onto his side. He pulled Clancy down with him so they were facing each other, their clasped hands between them. “I don’t want to remember being hurt.”

“Okay, so. Don’t.” Clancy smiled. “But if the memories do come back, you can tell me about them and we’ll do something fun.”

“Why?”

“So, instead of only having bad memories, we can make a bunch of new, happy ones. We can read some books, watch movies, go to the park. Once your pages dry, I’m going to start rebuilding the text block. Your new cover will be ready in a few days and then I can put you all back together. We could go on adventures! I could take you out—”

Vitruvius gasped. “Wait, that’s it.”

“What?”

“Why my memories are coming back. It’s you. It’s thebook.”

“You think your memories are tied to the physical book?”

“It makes more sense than your crazy theories.” Vitruvius smirked. “As you repair the book, I’m getting stronger. I suppose in time I may even remember my real name, who I was… what kind of demon I used to be.”

“And I’ll be here every step of the way,” Clancy promised. “There may even be a way to free you from that thing. There is this one story about a demon who needed a single drop of virgin blood—”

“You are certainly not a virgin.”

“Shush, listen. I’m just saying that there might be a way to help free you. You don’t have to stay trapped in that damn book forever.”

“Why are you doing this?”

“Doing what?”

Vitruvius fidgeted. “Helping me.”

“Well, it’s not every day that a very single man who’s a bit lonely happens to find a book with a very hot, very nice demon living in it.” Clancy smiled. “I know you’re going to say this is another of mycrazy theories, but I think I was meant to find you. Of all the people who could have bought you, I did. Me, a guy whose hobby is restoring old books. It’s just too perfect, you know?”

Vitruvius blushed, having thought the same thing a few times already. He kissed Clancy softly. “After being alone for a very, very long time, I don’t think I mind perfect.”

“Neither do I.” Clancy laced his fingers with Vitruvius as he kissed back, pressing closer. “Mm, well, I do still have some questions for you. Okay, I have a lot of questions, but there’s one in particular that I’m dying to ask.”

“What is it?”

“Well…” Clancy chuckled bashfully. “It may sound sort of silly.”

“More silly than your convoluted theory about me putting up a reward for my own book?”

“Fine, I won’t ask then!” Clancy groaned, playfully nudging Vitruvius’s chest. “I’ve changed my mind. You’re ameandemon.”

“Oh, come on.” Vitruvius leaned close so he could nuzzle Clancy’s cheek. He smooched his beard, his newly rediscovered tail reaching around to grab Clancy’s hip. “Please. I’ll be kind. I promise. Ask your question.”

“Do demons still like to cuddle?”

Vitruvius laughed.

“Well?”

“Yes. We do.”

Day 03

I wake up and everything feels wrong; it’s too quiet outside. I look out my window and see everyone standing still, frozen by the demon who’s come to claim me.
