“It’s locked!” Karl glanced around warily, making sure the creature wasn’t creeping around somewhere.

There was only one reason why it would be here.

Someone was going to die.

“Fuck. Watch out!” The man urged Karl back a few steps, and then he slammed his elbow into the rear driver’s-side window. The glass shattered, allowing him to reach in and unlock the front door. “Go on, open it!”

It was kind of hot how the stranger seemed to know exactly what to do, and Karl quickly opened the door. “Got it!”

The amount of blood that greeted him inside the car was definitely too much for one person to live without, and Karl’s heart sank.

“We gotta do something! He’s not gonna make it!” Karl sat the man up, giving him a little shake. “Hey! Mister, can you hear me? Hey! Come on, wake up. We got help coming, sir.”

“Hey, hey, wait.” The stranger shook his head, grimacing at the bloody state of the old man. He sighed and put his hand on Karl’s shoulder. “It’s too late. He’s gone, man.”

The old man wasn’t moving, he wasn’t breathing, and he was staring off into nothing.

Karl shuddered, and he turned to meet the stranger’s blue eyes, his own stinging with hot tears. “But I…”

“We tried,” the stranger soothed.

Karl didn’t want to cry, and he looked away, trying to find something else to focus on while he fought back more tears. He saw a bunch of reusable bags packed with groceries in the back seat of the car, and he suddenly thought about whoever this old man had at home who was waiting for him to get back with the food.

Fuck.

The stranger squeezed his shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay. I got you.”

Karl couldn’t explain why, but those words brought him such comfort, and he found himself nodding. Out of an entire crowd of people, the stranger was the only one who had come to help him try to save the old man.

He was an angel, as far as Karl was concerned.

The wail of approaching sirens in the distance signaled the impending arrival of police and paramedics, and the stranger turned to look as an ambulance pulled up beside them.

There was a big patch embroidered with a pair of angel wings on the back of the stranger’s jacket, and Karl smiled in spite of the grim circumstances. After all, he’d just thought about the stranger being an angel, and maybe this was a sign of something good for once.

Death could suck it. He might have taken that old man, but Karl had an angel with bright blue eyes who even had his own damn wings.

And an ass that lookedincrediblein denim.

Karl snapped his eyes away from the enticing view as the stranger came back over to him.

“EMS is here. Cops are comin’. I can see ’em down at the end of the block.” The stranger frowned, and he pulled out a bandana from his pocket. “Hey, you got blood on you. Here.”

Karl’s lips twitched up in a small smile as the stranger took his hand and wiped the blood away. He was surprised as hell, but it was kinda nice. The stranger’s fingers were soft, and he couldn’t remember the last time anyone had held his hand.

“Sorry I ain’t got no sanitizer or nothin’,” the stranger mumbled.

“That’s okay. Thanks.” Karl caught the stranger’s hand to give it a firm squeeze. “Thank you,” he repeated with more sincerity, meeting the stranger’s piercing blue eyes.

“Won’t nothin’.” The stranger’s face turned a lovely shade of pink, and he gave Karl’s hand a squeeze in return. “Just seemed like the right thing to do, you know.” He glanced down at Karl’s lips, and he opened his mouth as if he was about to say something—

“Hey! Move!” a woman in an EMT polo shirt shouted as she shoved through the crowd with a stretcher. Two more men in uniform were following her, and they swarmed around the car.

The stranger let go of Karl’s hand to scramble out of their way. Karl missed the stranger’s touch as soon as it was gone. He backed up as the professionals took over, and it was like a scene from a movie, with all the flashing lights and first responders coming to save the day.

Even if it was too late.

“What happened here?” the woman demanded as she checked the old man for vitals.
