“Don’t worry…you will.”

* * *

Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and Max’s dreams were better than ever. His waking hours were still horrible, but he looked forward to spending every evening in Krumm’s bed. He was the happiest he’d ever been, the sex was always amazing, and he was finally starting to understand all the wonderful things Krumm said about him.

Thanks to Krumm’s encouragement, he quit his crappy job at the diner and landed a nice position at an upscale restaurant as a host. He was making more money working less hours, and he had time to catch up on chores around the house and had enough money to sort out the bills. He even bought a new smartphone. He felt great, revitalized, and he went to bed early just so he could see Krumm sooner.

His success had an unexpected consequence—his father started looking for a job again.

He was not only looking for work, but he’d even stopped his drinking and was helping around the house more. For the first time in years, his father seemed to have hope. Sober and in control of his life, his father got the first job he interviewed for, and Max had never felt so proud.

Not just of his father, but of himself too.

Everything was going wonderfully…

Until Max went to bed one night and Krumm wasn’t there.

The room was empty.

Max spent the entire night searching for him and found nothing. There was no note, no letter, no clue at all as to where Krumm could be, and Max woke up devastated. Krumm meant the world to him, and he knew he’d already fallen hard for the mysterious monster weeks ago.

He was so upset that he called out of work, feigning some vague illness, and he stayed in bed watching videos on his new phone. He hadn’t gone a single night without seeing Krumm, and he was hopelessly confused. He tried fiddling around on the old spirit board, but nothing happened no matter what he tried. He was ready to chuck the whole thing into the trash when he heard a knock at the front door.

Max pulled on a T-shirt and headed downstairs, but he didn’t open the door yet. He peeked out the window to see who was there, expecting perhaps a delivery truck or his father coming home from work early and having forgotten his keys.

The first thing that grabbed Max’s attention was the mailman, paused in place along the sidewalk in front of the house, with letters in his hand he was about to drop into his bag. He wasn’t moving, and neither was the old woman walking her dog or the young man across the street mowing his lawn. They were all frozen like statues, perfectly still and lifeless, and Max’s heart thumped with dread.

He kept watching, hoping that someone would move soon, but there weren’t even cars driving by. He didn’t see anyone on his front porch, which made it even stranger when there was another loud knock.

He really did not want to open it now.

Max tiptoed over to peek through the peephole, confirming there was still nothing there. He was confused, a little scared, and adrenaline was making his fingers twitch. Something very strange was happening outside, and he—

“Max?” a rumbling voice called out.

Krumm!

Max whipped open the door and stared in shock at the mammoth monster standing there. “Krumm? Wait, how did you do that?”

“Hello.” Krumm waved. “I hid myself until I was certain you were going to answer the door. I saw you peeking through the window—”

“What are you doing here?” Max laughed and then poked himself. “Am I dreaming? Did I fall asleep or something?”

“No, my sweet boy.” Krumm smiled warmly. “You are awake, and I am here—”

“Where were you?” Max snapped. “I looked for you last night for hours! I had no idea where you were or if something had happened to you! I’ve been worried fucking sick! What the hell are—”

Krumm kissed him, and Max didn’t even care that it was probably to shut him up.

He kissed back eagerly, reaching up to wrap his arms around Krumm’s neck.

Krumm hugged him close, kissing him until they were both breathless and panting. He nuzzled Max’s cheek, saying, “I am sorry that I worried you, but I had to make preparations to travel here to this dimension.

“Wait, so you’re here?” Max’s eyes widened. “Like physically here and not just in my dream right now?”

“Yes, my sweet boy.” Krumm kissed him again, and then he took a deep breath to steady his voice as he said, “I love you. I have come to claim you, Max. I want you to be my mate for all time. Forever.”

“Forever?”
