“Totally understandable.” Matt draped a towel over the counter and then gently set the lizard down on top of it. “Okay, little guy, we’re just gonna take a little peek.”

The lizard looked ready to flee at any second, but he remained still so Matt could examine him.

Matt had a feeling Fidi had said something to help calm him, and he was always appreciative and in awe of his boyfriend’s unique skills. He carefully checked the lizard out all over, but still didn’t see any obvious injury. “Is he hurting at all?”

Fidi paused before replying, “No. But he can’t feel his back legs or his tail. He remembers running and then… flying. He flew. Into the ground.”

“Okay. Right.” Matt thought for a moment, and then he ducked under the sink. “Sounds like maybe he was somebody’s pet and got out. You know, like heescaped, and I bet his owner is probably worried sick about him.”

Fidi pouted.

“I have an idea to fix him up until we get him to a vet and track down his owner.” Matt grabbed some of the extra Lego pieces he kept for Professor X’s wheels. He was confident he could do it again for the new lizard.

Who needed a name…

At least just temporarily. It was absolutely temporary because this little guy had a home they needed to get him back to and Matt was definitely not thinking about potentially keeping another special needs reptile.

Maybe.

“Okay, Pete,” Matt said as he clicked bricks together to create a base for the wheels, “these aren’t gonna make you fly, but you should be able to get around.”

“Pete?” Fidi tilted his head.

“Pete the Dragon.” Matt set the wheels underneath Pete’s hips, making a few small adjustments to ensure a good fit. “Because he looks like a cute little armored dragon!” He frowned. “Does he not like it?”

“The wheels or the name?”

“Both.”

Fidi paused. “Ah, he likes both.”

“Good.” Matt beamed. “I’m glad. We should have him all fixed up in just a second. Now I just gotta figure out how to attach it to him.”

“Can you not attach it as you did with Professor X?” Fidi wiggled closer, raising himself up on his powerful tail so he could peer over Matt’s shoulder.

“No. For the Professor, I glued it directly to his shell. I need something else…” Matt adjusted his glasses and looked around the bathroom. “Like maybe… aha!” He swung his foot up awkwardly on the side of the toilet so he could pull out the laces from his shoe.

“Ah!” Fidi beamed and flashed his pointy teeth. “You are so very clever.”

“I have my moments.” Matt blushed as he tied the shoelace around the wheels and Pete’s body to create a small harness. “Okay! That should work until we can get some bandages or something. Uh…”

Pete was staring up at them.

“Can you please tell him to try it out? He might have to pull with his front legs more but—”

Pete zoomed forward, flying off the towel and onto the toilet. He paused, looked around, and then spun back to leap onto the floor.

Fidi bowed and held out his hands. “Aww, yes. He is very happy. So very happy.” He scooped Pete right up, smiling brightly. “Ah, and Pete is very hungry.”

“Another problem I can totally solve.”

“You’re amazing.”

“Says the magical talking snake-man.” Matt winked.

“We are both amazing then.”

“I’ll take it.”
