Matt led them out to the living room so he could grab the spare tank and set it up next to Maggie. He got a water dish, a heating lamp, a few spare plants, and everything else he needed to get Pete’s temporary tank ready.
Once he was done, he turned to take Pete from Fidi. “I’m ready for the patient.”
“You can trust him,” Fidi promised Pete as he passed him over. “Matt is the best owner ever.”
“Boyfriend,” Matt corrected with a smile.
“Ah, yes. That.” Fidi ducked his head shyly. “Boyfriend.” He eyed Pete. “Except he will not be your boyfriend because he is mine.”
“I don’t think you have to worry about the lizard stealing me.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.” Matt resisted the urge to grin. “All right, Pete. You can bunk here next to Maggie for a little while.” He carefully set Pete down inside the tank. “It’s just temporary, okay? We’re going to the vet ASAP to get you checked out and see if anyone has reported a missing lizard.”
Fidi cocked his head, clearly listening to someone Matt couldn’t hear.
“Is Pete all right?” Matt asked, hoping that he wasn’t interrupting.
“Pete is fine. It is Maggie.” Fidi listened for a few more beats because he said, “Maggie does not like his new neighbor and wants to come back to the bedroom. He promises not to make any more crude comments about the private things we do. He would like to remind you that he is blind and technically can’t see any of them anyway.”
“Tell Maggie I’ll think about it.”
“Hmm. Maggie says that means no.”
“Maggie is a very smart snake.” Matt closed the top of Pete’s tank. “All right, Pete. I think you’re good to go. But we’re still totally taking you to the vet. I have that emergency exotic vet number… somewhere.”
“He is very, very thankful.” Fidi snuggled against Matt’s side. “As am I, for having such a wonderfulboyfriend.”
Matt smiled and hugged Fidi close, kissing his scaly brow. “I think you’re the wonderful one.” He narrowed his eyes playfully. “Even when you sneak out and scare the crap out of me. I’m nailing that window shut, I swear—”
“I don’t mean to scare you, but I really can’t help it. If I hear another creature in trouble, I want to assist them.”
“I know. And it’s… well…” Matt forgot what he was going to say, lost in Fidi’s bright yellow eyes. “It’s one of the things I love about you.”
“Aw, Matt. That’s so very sweet! I love you too!” Fidi hugged him tight, but then he grunted. “Oh! You are poking me.”
“I am?” Matt pulled back, wondering if his dick had somehow gotten hard without him realizing it.
“Here.” Fidi poked Matt’s chest.
The ring!
Matt had been running around trying to keep himself busy since he’d gotten home, and he hadn’t bothered to take off his coat. The ring box was right there in his pocket, and he gulped. “Oh. That.”
“Is it new?” Fidi frowned. “Have you always had a lump there?”
“No, it’s just, uh…” Matt gulped again. “A surprise!”
Fidi’s eyes lit up. “A surprise?”
“Yes, for after dinner—”
Fidi took off like a shot, zooming by Matt as he bolted into the kitchen
“What are you doing?” Matt laughed.
“Making dinner!” Fidi grinned. “I want my surprise!”
