Matt turned his head to study the tanks, and he gasped.

The top of the temporary tank Pete was staying in was open.

“Hey, where’s Pete?”

“Oh!” Fidi blinked. “I’m not sure…” He cocked his head. “He is… in our room. He found… a box?”

“What the hell?” Matt got up, quickly hurrying into the bedroom. He swore he’d shut the door, but it was open. Tangled up in the middle of the floor was his coat and Pete, who was curled around the ring box.

“He found my surprise!” Fidi cried as he came slithering in behind Matt.

“Did you tell him to come find this?” Matt frowned.

“No, Maggie did.”

“Dammit!” Matt barked out a laugh. “You’re all a bunch of troublemakers, you know that?”

“Yes. As long as troublemakers can have surprises?” Fidi smiled sweetly.

“Hold on.” Matt chuckled. “Let me get the other escape artist back into his tank and then yes, you may have your surprise.” He carefully picked up the ring box and Pete. “Be right back!”

“I’ll be here. Here, yes? Should I wait here?”

“There is fine!” Matt called out as he hurried to put Pete back inside his tank. He closed the lid again and then grabbed a few heavy books to stick on top. “There. No more escaping, little guy.” He eyed Maggie. “And you, no more shenanigans.”

He swore Maggie was smirking.

Matt stared down at the ring box left in his hand, and he took a deep breath. This was it. This was finally going to be it. He was going to take a few moments to compose himself, and then he could—

Fidi slithered back out with a big grin. “Hi!”

“Hi?” Matt blinked. “I was gonna come back. I just, uh, needed a second.”

“Maggie told me you were ready. And something about how he will engage in all the shenanigans he wants to.” Fidi frowned. “He keeps saying engage all weird. What is going—”

“Dammit, Maggie!”

“What is wrong?”

“Fidi.” Matt quickly dropped to one knee. “This past year has been the best of my entire life. I’ve never been so happy. You make me feel seen, like you really understand me, and wow, desired. Like, sodesired and sexy and I can’t imagine spending my life with anyone else.” He opened the box to show Fidi the ring.

Fidi gasped, and his bright eyes widened. “Oh, Matt.”

“Fidi, I love you. Will you please marry—”

“Yes!” Fidi squealed, his tail wrapping around Matt’s waist. He lifted him right off the ground to press a deep kiss to his lips with a happy sigh, cradling the sides of his face. “Yes! Yes, yes, yes! I love you so much!”

Matt wheezed from the force of Fidi’s embrace, doing his best to keep breathing and return the kiss with equal passion. When part of his lower back popped, however, he patted Fidi’s shoulder. “Mmm, Fidi, baby. Need air… let go…”

“Oh!” Fidi immediately relaxed and grinned sheepishly. “Sorry. I got excited. No one has ever proposed to me before.”

“It’s totally okay.” Matt grinned right back at him. “I haven’t ever proposed to anybody, so hey, first time for me too.”

“I love you so much.”

“I love you too. I don’t care how we do it, even if it’s just a ceremony here with Maggie and Captain Jack as our witnesses. I love you, and I want to be with you forever.”

“I love you too, Matt.” Fidi slid his fingers through Matt’s hair. “Best future husband ever. I love you. I love my ring. I love our life. I love everything.”
