When he didn’t see him right away, he panicked until he realized the creature had merely sunk down into the water.

Randall tiptoed back to the side of the tub. “Are you all right in there?”

The creature was fully submerged except for his nose and the top of his head, and he eyed Randall cautiously.

Randall held up his hands. “Hey, I’m not trying anything funny, I promise. I just want to help you, that’s it.”

The creature scowled.

Randall took a few steps away from the tub. Maybe the creature was shy. Randall reasoned that he wouldn’t want someone watching him bathe, and perhaps this creature was the same way. He moved a large screen over to block his view and then sat on the edge of his bed on the other side of the trailer, staring at the ceiling to remove any temptation to peek.

The creature chittered, and there was splashing.

Okay, maybeonepeek, just to make sure the creature was all right.

Randall leaned forward to glance around the side of the screen, and he was delighted to see the creature dunking his head into the water.

The creature was washing his face, massaging his chest, rubbing his lean body all over…

Oh!

Randall quickly looked away before he was spotted.

He was happy to let the creature play in the water for as long as he wanted, and he decided to go ahead and get the nasty crate out of here. He had no intention of putting the creature back inside, and the smell was wretched.

One of the wooden slats had landed close to the tub, so Randall crept forward with his hand over his eyes, blindly feeling around on the floor for it.

The creature hissed.

“Don’t worry!” Randall said. “I’m just trying to get it out of here, okay?” He peeked through his fingers to find the errant slat, and he glanced at the creature as he picked it up. “I’m throwing it in the trash. Do you understand?”

The creature fell silent, and he frowned at Randall.

“You’re not going back in there. No more crate.”

“No more crate?” the creature repeated flawlessly.

Randall could hardly believe it, and he smiled. “Exactly! No more crate.” He waved his arms around the trailer. “You. Free. In here. Do you understand?”

The creature dipped back into the water, and he didn’t say anything else.

Randall left the trailer long enough to dispose of the crate, the chains, and then hang up the wet blanket to dry. When he came back in, the creature was scrambling against the edge of the tub.

“Do you need help?” Randall asked. “Are you trying to get out?”

The creature narrowed his eyes. “Help?”

“Yes.” Randall grabbed a towel—it was actually four towels sewn together—and he held it up as a shield to block his view of the creature as he approached the tub. “Here. I won’t peek, I promise.”

The creature grunted as if protesting, but then there was a tug on the towel. “Help?” He sighed loudly. “Please?”

Randall scooped the creature up in the towel, pulling him out of the bath. The creature was very light, and Randall couldn’t resist holding him close as he carried him over to his bed. “Here we go!”

The creature struggled inside the giant towel once he’d been set down, but he was able to wrap it around his shoulders and start drying off.

Randall respectfully turned around to go clean up the tub. The water was nearly black from how filthy the poor creature had been, and Randall noticed the scrap of cloth the creature had been wearing was in there too. He carried the tub outside to dump it out, his heart thumping as he tried not to think too hard about the very naked and very beautiful creature in his bed.

When Randall returned, he said, “Hey, little one? I’ve got more berries if you’re hungry? I could…”
