“Accident or something else?” Sage asked.

Even behind the plastic shield that covered his face, Sage could see Dante’s hardened expression.

“We’ll find out. If it’s someone else’s hand at work there’ll be hell to pay. Pun intended.”

Sage recognized a force of nature when she saw one and Dante Houlos was all that.

With the addition of more firetrucks, and more water, slowly the blaze calmed. But there was still the danger that other nearby buildings could catch fire given the high winds and the sparks. Western Canada had been plagued by forest fires over the past decade and everyone knew how quick and dangerous these things could spread.

Sage looked down the street and noticed Bikes & Brews was now a pile of broken windows, smoke, and burnt wood.

One building was an accident. Two on different sides of the street was deliberate.

Then Sage remembered Padraig and his visit to town earlier.

“I saw the Midnight Carnage crew in town today. Could it be them? Are you guys in a turf war?”

Dante’s head whipped around, his eyes narrowing.

“What exactly did you see and what the fuck do you know about turf wars?”

Sage shrugged. “I don’t know much about biker clubs except what I read in the news. And the Midnight Carnage crew were driving towards the highway when I was coming into town. Fast. Like they wanted to get out of town right quick. I assumed you saw them too. But that was hours ago.”

“Your sister was married to one of them,” Dante replied and crossed his arms.

“She was.”

“And so, what, you just moved here for the fresh country air?”

Sage shook her head.

“Truth?”

“That’d be in your best interest,” he growled.

A shiver ran up Sage’s spine. She had to remember to watch her mouth and not push him too far.

“The police have done fuck all to investigate her murder. And I know that her death wasn’t some random act of violence. Padraig killed her.”

Dante shook his head. “So, what, you just thought you’d move here and do some digging of your own? That’s just asking for trouble.”

“I didn’t ask your advice and I don’t need your opinion. My sister deserves justice, and I won’t stop until she gets it.”

“You have no fucking idea what you’re up against. If you think you can take on that crew, you’re sadly mistaken.”

“I didn’t say I was going to do it myself,” Sage replied with a smirk.

“Whatever it is you’re thinking, no,” Dante snapped. “They won’t hesitate to get rid of a nosy bitch like you, so leave it alone.”

He re-adjusted his mask and turned his back on her.

Sage grabbed his shoulder.

Suddenly, he whipped around, and she was pushed up against the truck, Dante’s hard body aligned perfectly with hers. Then all she saw was dark pools of amber, his eyes almost feverish in their intensity.

“Don’t ever grab someone from behind!” Dante yelled.

Sage could hardly breathe, and it had nothing to do with the ventilation in her mask.
