“Interviewing?” Sage looked at him with one raised eyebrow.

“Interrogating,” Dante clarified. “Don’t be surprised if Sonny doesn’t let you in. It’s one thing to see our clubhouse but the bunker is part of our business. Once you know about it, there’s no turning back.”

He would never hurt Sage, but his brothers might feel differently. Especially when this business with Midnight was over and Sage went back to her farm. If she went back. Maybe she’d sell up if there was no reason to stay.

The thought of Sage leaving Longford, leaving him, made Dante shiver. And he wasn’t fucking cold.

It took them just under five minutes to get to the bunker. Dante dropped Sage’s hand when he spotted Gage standing at the door, talking to Jesse and Avery.

“What’s she doing here?” Gage demanded as they approached.

“I want in on questioning Cameron,” Sage stated.

Gage crossed his arms and stepped up to her. He got right up her face.

Sage barely blinked.

He had to hand it to her. She was determined and nothing was gonna stand in her way. Not even Gage Hellion.

“You got big-ass cajónes, sweetheart. Are you sure you can handle it?” Gage asked.

“Yes.”

“All right then. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. But if you ever, ever, breathe a word of this to anyone, you’ll be visiting here again. For the last time.”

Sage nodded in understanding.

Gage motioned to Jesse and Avery, and Avery opened the door. She went in first, then Sage, then Dante.

There was a cutout in the floorboards in the middle of the room and a set of stairs that led underground.

As Avery walked them down into the damp tunnel, Dante felt a moment of panic.

He wasn’t claustrophobic by nature but sometimes being down here reminded him of his time overseas. Being stuck in some godforsaken sand hole for hours, days, waiting to attack or be attacked. Not knowing if you’d feel the sun on your face again, or watch it rise. Not knowing if you’d make it to the next day.

Dante’s steps faltered the deeper they went, and he had to pause. He was lightheaded.

As if sensing his hesitation, Sage turned and walked back up to stand near him.

“Are you okay?” Sage asked.

“I… yeah, I just need a minute.”

Taking a deep breath, he was surprised to find Sage reaching out her hand to touch his arm. His body calmed at her touch.

“Does the tunnel remind you of your time overseas?”

“You know about my service?”

“I did my research remember?”

“On me?”

“Yes.”

Dante should have been angry, but he was too overloaded right now. Instead, he nodded. “It does remind me. I lost a lot of good friends. Usually, I’m fine but when I get overtired and stressed, it can hit me. Let’s just get this over with. I’ll go for a ride later to relax.”

Sage squeezed his shoulder. He wanted to lean into her but at the same time, he hated the fact that he was getting attached. He didn’t rely on anyone to help him through his problems. No one except his crew.
