“I’m home,” Dante whispered.

That warm, happy feeling settled inside him. Was it the good drugs kicking in or was it Sage?

“Me too.”

Her hot breath teased his lips and Dante smiled.

It was all Sage.

Dante wokeup a short while later to find Sage and Jesse sitting beside him again.

“How long have I been out?” he asked, his voice hoarse.

“Since this morning? A couple of hours.”

“My mouth is dry as hell.”

“Let me take your temperature first, check your stitches, and then you can have a drink.”

Dante nodded while Jesse shoved a thermometer in his ear. The reader beeped twice.

“Normal, thank fuck.”

Then Jesse carefully set aside Dante’s sheet and inspected his leg. It still hurt like hell but at least Dante didn’t feel quite as exhausted as he did earlier.

“It looks good, but we’ll keep a close eye in case of infection.”

Sage offered him a cup of water which he gratefully sipped on.

“I’ll leave you in the capable hands of Nurse Sage,” Jesse teased and headed out of the room.

Dante turned to Sage. “I like the sound of that. Baby—”

“Don’t ‘baby’ me. You scared me to death yesterday!” Sage snapped, her eyes welling up.

“No, no don’t do that! Don’t start crying again.”

“I can cry if I want to,” she replied and tilted her head in that stubborn pose he knew well now.

Instead of saying anything else, Dante reached his hand out. Sage took it, kneeling beside him. There was no hesitation in her movements. It made him smile.

“Get over here and give me a kiss,” he demanded.

“Getting shot hasn’t affected you at all, has it?” she smirked and shook her head.

“I wouldn’t say that. In fact, I had an ‘aha’ moment yesterday.”

“About what?”

“About you.”

“Oh really? And?” Sage whispered, leaning closer.

Dante licked his lips and his gaze locked on Sage’s mouth. So soft, so sweet.

“And something’s definitely going on here.” He pointed between the two of them. “Being with you feels like coming home. I don’t know how else to describe it.”
