“Well, well, well, what do we have here?” Alexei’s agape mouth snapped shut, and a smirk replaced it. His fiery crimson and coffee gaze moored me to my spot as he purred, “I believe I just caught a gaggle of witches up to somethingverynaughty.”

His door opened, and he unfolded his body onto the street, leaning against the car. “I can’t wait to hear the colorful excuse you’ll use to explain yourself out of this one, darling.”

The witches shared a look of shock before Sara, the flirty witch from the pub, barreled closer with her finger pointed in accusation. “We don’t have to explain shit to you.”

Her pointed glare would have been more impressive had she not lurched sideways under the impressive alcohol levels pumping through her blood.

My arms folded against my chest imperiously. “You misunderstand me. I am an advocate for mischievous endeavors. I’m merely surprised Jade Belle is amongst your group of conspirators.”

The sly remark seemed to wake Jade from the drunken haze she had fallen under. She swayed on her feet, her cheeks flushing as her eyes darted to my lips and lingered. “Where were you headed?”

She took in my dinner jacket and trousers with a flick of her tongue pressed against her bottom lip. I wanted to draw it into my mouth and then nibble on that bee-stung petal myself.

“Why do you want to know, darling?” I grinned, flashing her my fangs.

Wobbling in her boots, her stare turned flinty as she probably conjured images of sex clubs and burlesque dancers, a once avid portion of my social calendar. Green had become my favorite color since I first gazed into the earth witch’s pretty eyes, but now I savored the slash of jealousy that sizzled within those endless depths.

“You know we could just scry for your location anyway, right?” Sara jumped in protectively, reading the hard lines of our bodies. She picked at her nail beds nonchalantly. “Might as well accept your fate now and tell us.”

“Gods, you witches can be annoying beyond all measure,” I groaned, though I couldn’t say the night’s turn of events displeased me. In fact, it was exactly as I had secretly hoped for—a chance to talk with Jade and possibly repeat our tryst from last week. Turning to her, I angled my head to the passenger door. “What do you say, darling? Up for a night of mystery? Unless you and your friends plan on breaking into another cemetery, that is.”

Jade couldn’t turn down the gauntlet I laid before her, her shoulders ratcheting up with tension. “Count me in.”

The Salem witches made noises of mock-outrage.

“Girl code, Jade! You’re meant to crash with us back at Elaine’s and then slither out of a hungover fog to get brunch at Bennet’s,” Sara whined, but her friend elbowed her in the ribs.

Laughing, the witch with glasses dangling precariously off her pert nose looked pleased. “Don’t worry, Jade. You can still come to the brunch portion of events. None of us can fault you for adjusting your evening for better endeavors.”

“Speak for yourself.” The third witch snorted, before she wobbled, nearly hitting her forehead on a light pole.

I rolled my eyes and released a warm chuff. “Get in the car, witches. Let me at least drop you off at your homes.”

Jade opened the back door for the girls with a grin, and they piled in, muttering to each other drunkenly as they squeezed into the lush, leather seats.

I walked around to open the passenger door for Jade and she smirked, reaching up to brush a chaste kiss to my lips.

“Come on, DD,” she breathed. “The sooner we get these idiots home, the sooner you can spill where you’re headed to looking so delicious.”

A purr rumbled in my chest, and I nearly stole another heated kiss from her, damn our audience.

The witches wolf-whistled and made kissing noises from the backseat, and Jade grew flushed, jumping into the seat before I could take the kiss from my sultry witch anyway.

Closing the door behind her, I reclaimed my seat, driving off into the night with slurred directions as my guide. Over the radio, I listened half-heartedly to their conversation, but my focus remained on the hand Jade left on the center console.

With an innocent expression, I reached across and grasped her fingers with mine, holding it as I expertly spun the steering wheel with one hand. Her lips twitched as the witches made gagging sounds from the back.

Not soon enough, we arrived at the small cottage not far from my intended destination.

Jade helped the witches into the home bursting with warmblood heartbeats, her cheeks puffed irritably when she returned with an overexaggerated sigh. She leaned her head back against the headrest and shut her eyes briefly. “It seems my habits as the overbearing elder sister are harder to break than I thought.”

“Did you tuck them into bed with a glass of milk and hangover pills?”

She exhaled, sending the wisps of her bangs flying past her half-lidded eyes. “Nearly. They forced me away before I could find the kitchen.”

I laughed affectionately, finally taking another taste of her lips as I pulled the car back onto the road.
