Page 32 of Where We Started

Spider started his bike and took off through the back side of Sasha’s property, avoiding the main road, and within a few seconds, three new bikes were parked in front of her house in a plume of dust. Sasha swiped at her eyes, then seemed to mess with her hair, as if she could erase the imprint of his fingers in it.

The door was still open, and within the span of a few breaths, Wesley was walking through it, followed by Killian. The third person was someone I didn’t recognize. Max barked again, and this time, I removed my hand, allowing him the chance to go sniff and inspect the newcomers.

I hated how my eyes searched for Wesley’s, and I hated even more that his gaze skipped Sasha completely and landed on me first. He stood frozen on the threshold, as if he needed to work out what had just happened.

“Who the fuck was just here, Sasha?” he asked, his voice as turbulent and violent as any tempest in the ocean.

I let out a shuddered breath, needing a second to regroup. My fingers were numb from how hard I was gripping my mug.

Sasha seemed just as shaken as she rasped, “Spider. He heard you and took off.”

Killian’s gaze snapped over to me, then landed like a soft blanket over Laura. He took three steps closer to us, crowding the opposite side of the counter that Laura was huddled against. His worry wasn’t for me. Killian knew I would know how to handle a random rival member showing up, regardless that it was the one rival group that had kidnapped me when I was just eighteen years old. Still, deep down, I knew he was standing there for my best friend, and a piece of me wanted to reach out and thank him for it. As it was, I was far too selfish to care for Laura myself, right now.

Wes was across the room within seconds, their third member hanging back near the door, watching the road through one of Sasha’s windows.

“You had a fucking Death Raider in your house while Callie was here?”

I flinched at how loud and angry Wesley’s voice carried through the room.

Sasha lowered her head, as if she were ashamed. “I forgot that he was expecting me last night. I heard she’d arrived in town, and you refused to let the poor girl stay anywhere, so I brought them here and forgot about my meetup.”

Wes ran his large hand through his dark hair. Worry lined his face, and fear marked his movements. I wanted some answers, but I knew if I asked, no one would give them to me. It was club business, and I wasn't in the club.

“Did he recognize her?” Wesley’s voice pitched the slightest bit, which was the only indication that somewhere down deep inside was the boy I once loved.

Sasha shook her head, but I was nodding. Wesley’s eyes narrowed on us both.

“Which is it? Did he fucking recognize her or not?”

I lifted my hands like I was weighing something and shrugged. “Well, he said I was familiar…but he couldn’t place me.”

Laura scoffed, stepping closer, and I noticed Killian’s jaw clench as she stepped closer to him.

“No, he knew her. He might not have acknowledged her name, but he knew her face. Sasha had to practically offer a lap dance to get him to stop looking at Callie.”

That was exactly the wrong thing to say to Wes. I knew it the second his dark brows formed a shelf and his eyes narrowed, all while that deliciously firm jaw of his ticked.

“Get your things.” He said it to me, but he was staring at Sasha as if she had somehow let him down.

“Wes, I had no idea,” Sasha started, but Wes cut her off.

“No idea?” he snarled.

I flinched, and so did Laura, and while I would normally never do anything my stupid ex-boyfriend ordered me to do, I was scrambling off the stool and rushing up to the loft with my best friend and dog on my heels.

I hurriedly tore off my pajamas and pulled on a pair of shorts and tank top, tossing my remaining things into my bag. Then I tiptoed closer to the banister to eavesdrop.

I heard Sasha apologizing again and saw Wesley gesturing wildly with his arms.

“What if he had realized who she was, Sasha? You wanted to protect her, and you threw her right into the mouth of the fucking lion.”

Sasha stepped up, pushing against his chest. “What about you? You refused to keep her safe by denying her entry anywhere.”

Wes scoffed and ran his hands through his hair. “So she would leave!”

Sasha spun in a circle, gesturing for Killian’s help.

“What would have stopped her from stopping in Rauland, or Coulder…both towns are newer Raider territory, she wouldn’t even know she was walking into danger. You weren’t thinking, Wes, and you’re pissed because one slipped past your defenses. You can’t keep that girl from what’s owed to her.”
