“It’s your cut. It looks brand new—that, and we’ve heard of you.”

The door opened, and soft lighting flooded my vision. I ignored Silas’s last comment and pushed into the room. My eyes skipped over everything else in the room and landed on a long, L- shaped couch, where my girlfriend was tucked under a soft-looking blanket. They sharpened on the woman sitting next to her.

She had dark hair and seemed a bit older than me, but the set of her jaw and harshness of her stare told me she wasn’t one to be trifled with. I was almost to Callie when the woman placed a protective hand on her back, glaring up at me.

“Who are you?” Her eyes flicked to my cut, inspecting the patches.

Silas spoke up for me, “Sasha, it’s okay—this is the boyfriend, Wesley Ryan.”

I gave her a nod. “You look out for her?”

Her chin dipped, her eyes slowly moving to Callie’s sleeping form.

“I never thought he’d stoop so low as to kidnap someone’s child.”

Her gaze returned to mine with tears gleaming.

“Take her and get her as far away from this shit as you possibly can. If you love her at all, you’ll get her the fuck out of Virginia.”

With that, she stood from her place next to my girlfriend and walked out of the room.

Tears burned at the corner of my eyes as I crouched in front of Callie and gently pushed a strand of hair off her face.

“She’s been given a sedative. Nothing harsh. She’ll wake up in an hour or two,” Silas said softly from behind me.

I continued watching her sleep, her dark lashes dusting the freckled skin above her cheekbones. Her usually plump, pink lips looked cracked, like she hadn’t had enough water today, and there was a tiny bruise developing near her temple.

“Who hit her?” I asked, brushing the pad of my finger over the mark.

Silas shifted behind me, clearing his throat. “They call him Poet. He’s a big motherfucker. Dirk put him on grabbing her from that parking lot, and he wasn’t gentle.”

Rage began to gnaw away at my resolve. I wanted to stalk upstairs and find him, but I needed to take her out of here first.

“Thank you, Silas,” I muttered before dipping to grab Callie under her legs and back. I brought her to my chest, tucking her under my chin and taking the blanket with me.

“You’re welcome…but can you do me a favor?”

Holding her, I turned to see him strapping on a bullet proof vest.

“You need to shoot me.”

Sasha suddenly reappeared with her arms crossed, standing against the door frame.

“I’ll take care of it, Silas, just let him leave.”

Silas turned to inspect her with his brows raised. “Mom, I’m not letting you do that.”

I looked between them and realized now how similar they seemed.

Sasha stared at her son and then flicked her gaze to me. “Get her out of here.”

“Mom, he’s going to kill us if you do this.”

I had always considered myself a morally decent person. I’d help someone if they needed it, offer money to the homeless, I never stole, never cheated on tests. I considered myself good.

But in that moment, seeing these two people who had helped me possibly face backlash from doing it, I simply didn’t care. If I had to choose to help someone, it was going to be Callie.

That may have been the tipping point for me, realizing I’d kill them both myself if it meant I had a way out of there.
