“You and I have nothing to talk about. I did what you wanted, I left. I don’t know why you’re here, Garon, but you should leave.”

“Ishould leave?”

“Yes. You’re the one who can’t look at me, remember?”

I moved, trying to get past him and return to the main room, but Garon was faster and he pushed me deeper into the shadows of the corridor.

“Not so fast.”

“Leave me alone, Ihaveto work.”

“Work?” He was looking at me like it was the first time he’d heard that word. “You work? In a place like this?”

“What else did you expect?” I was alone, all alone with no help, and debts that weren’t mine. I didn’t have the right to get picky with the work, so I ended up here, in one of Tony Balbano’s underground clubs, where women came to be sold.

“Where the fuck is Martino? Why does he let you do this?” He was shaking like I’ve never seen him before. “I’m going to kill him for letting you debase yourself in this fucking place.”

I laughed in his face. “Good luck finding him. I sure have no idea where he is.”

“What is that supposed to mean? You left Palermo with him.”

“I did, and then he abandoned me in a hotel room.” And left me his debt to take care of. “It’s none of your business, Garon.”

“Martino is gone? Where?” I didn’t answer, because that talk would bring back the bitter taste of disappointment. “They left you behind? Alone in fucking Rome?”

“Drop it! My life is not your problem.”

“Like hell it isn’t. You’re…” He stopped himself before he could finish, letting me starve for the end of that question. “Come on, I’m taking you out of here.”

“No.”

“No?”

“No, Garon, I’m not leaving with you. Ihaveto work and you don’t get to mess with my life anymore. You’ve done enough damage.”

He jumped back, like I’d took heated metal and threatened to brand him. I’ve seen the change from anger to something else… something much scarier. It was like a cloud descended upon him.

“You offered yourself to me, Pina.”

“What? No, that’s not what I was talking about. Just leave me alone.” This time I got to walk past him and make three whole steps before I was trapped in the cage of his defined arms, slammed against his chest.

Funny how life works. I’ve dreamed about him holding me like that for years, but now all I wanted to do was put some space between us. As much space as possible.

“Don’t walk away from me.”

“You told me to go.” I said bitterly. “You told me to leave your city.”

“Pina,” he spun me around in his arms and my breasts dragged along his shirt. My nipples tightened right away. “I need to get you out of here. I can’t watch you like this.”

“I’m not asking your permission. You’re not my…” lover. “friend.”

“I don’t give a fuck…” his tirade was cut short and over his shoulder I saw the familiar face of Leonardo Bugllioni showing from around the corner.

Leonardo was handsome by anyone’s standards—tall, blond, with deep brown eyes—but standing next to Garon it was like watching the prince and the pauper. He was fading into the background.

“What the hell is going on?” His voice boomed into the hall. “Get your hands off. She’s not on the market.”

Garon looked at Leo with flames in his eyes. “On the market?” He laughed. “No, she isn’t. Who the hell are you?”
