“We’ve been together for a long time, but I was nervous too. I was nervous the first time he kissed me, the first time I slept with him, even if I’ve always known it would be him.”

“I’m worrying for nothing, aren’t I?”

“All I’m saying is I think it’s a good thing you’re nervous. Yes, you and Garon jumped straight into the middle of the action with the baby and everything, but your relationship is still new. I just hope what you’re feeling are good nerves.”

A suffocated moan escaped from my throat. “He’s the only man I’ve ever wanted, Grazia. I just feel like he’s with me out of pity or obligation and I don’t know what to do to make sure he’s not getting the short end of the stick.”

“First of all, Garon doesn’t do things because hehasto, he only does it if he wants to. I’m ready to bet my wedding ring that if he’d have got any other woman pregnant, he would have never moved her into his house and tell the entire family she was a Caputo woman now.”

“What?”

“He didn’t tell you?”

“No.”

“The whole city knows by now that you’re Garon Caputo’s woman. If I were you, I’d be more nervous about how much people will talk, not dinner with Garon.”

“Grazia!” I whined. “Now I’m worried about that too.”

“Oh, don’t worry, it’s not so bad. I outraged every single person on this part of the island when I ran to Sasa, but eventually, it died down. Now, about your other problem, I have a pretty simple solve.”

“What?” She lost me and I wasn’t sure what she was talking about.

“You think Garon doesn’t want you? Then make him.”

“That simple, huh?”

“It is. You know what, don’t move. I’m on my way to meet Maya for a shopping session right now.” Maya, one of Grazia’s sisters-in-law was legendary for her fashion sense. “You’re coming with us. We’ll buy you something hot to wear, go have our hair done, the whole thing. Garon will worship at your feet when he sees you.”

“Oh, you don’t have to…”

“I’ll be there in ten minutes. Go get ready.”

“Boobs up.” Maya came behind me and made me straighten my back. “Damn, Pina. You look lethal.”

I looked at my reflection in the same mirror where I’d examined my bump this morning and I could see my face, but the rest didn’t look like me at all. Nine times out of ten, I would choose comfortable over sexy and summer dresses over tight outfits, and after working at the Flora House, forced to undress in front of the whole world, I wouldn’t have minded staying burrowed in a jacket for the rest of my life. But Maya was right. Damn.

Maya took us to her hair stylist where Grazia trimmed her ends while they put highlights in my hair, cut my bangs and gave me a blowout. I looked beautiful—the hair, the makeup, the short black dress, everything contoured the image of this sensual woman that I didn’t know, but I was excited to meet. I was sure of one thing though, the Pina I saw in the mirror looked much more like the type of woman Garon would take out.

“You look beautiful.” Grazia clapped her hands and checked her phone. “My husband is on his way to pick me up. We’ll take Maya home too.”

“Do you have any idea where Garon is?” He called twice to check on me, but that was hours ago.

“He’s not with Salvatore. Call him, babe.” She looked straight into my eyes. “Tell him to come home or you’ll start having fun without him.”

Maya laughed and I gaped at her. “Is that what you’re doing to poor Salvatore? Torturing him with sex?”

“Yes.”

“You should learn.” Maya pointed at me. “It reminds them who really has the power in the relationship.”

I wasn’t sure Garon was the kind of man that liked being teased.

“Thank you for today.” I said to both of them. “Maya, you really are a shopping god. I love the dress.”

“Call me any time you want to hit the stores,Amore. And enjoy yourself tonight. Go out and have fun before your tummy would be too big to fit in this dress.”
