“You’re right, I should do that. I think I’m still not completely used to the idea that soon my life won’t be just mine anymore. I should take advantage of this time.”

Maya’s hand slowly moved towards my stomach and her eyes filled with a distinct kind of longing. “It will be hard, but so worth it, Pina. This child is a blessing, never think anything different.”

“Of course.” I glanced at Grazia. She couldn’t tell me anything with Maya there, but she didn’t have to because Maya and her husband were crazy in love and I was sure that the reason they didn’t have any children after almost ten years of marriage wasn’t lack of trying nor because they didn’t want any.

The tension broke when my phone made a chirping sound from the sink counter.

“It’s Garon.” I said. “He’ll be home shortly.”

“Then we should leave.” Grazia grabbed her sister-in-law by the arm. “Our job here is done. Call me tomorrow and tell me what my brother said.Bona fortuna28, Pina.”

I didn’t need luck, I needed some nerve so I wouldn’t feel like swooning every time Garon walked into a room. It was hard, though, he was so… so perfect in every way. No one has spent more time on this earth thinking about Garon Caputo. Even in his worst moments, even when he took the heart out of my chest and stepped on it, I could never find any flaws in him. He was handsome and powerful, always the most magnetic presence in the room. Everyone wanted to be around Garon ever since he was a kid; some for his money, some for his name, women because he was so goddamn gifted, even more than the rest of his brothers. Me, on the other hand, I liked to hide far away from people’s eyes, and Garon’s enormous presence felt overwhelming. He was wild, untamed light and I was the shadows lurking in the corners.

After the girls left, I paced around the living room with Panini following my every step, trying to do what Grazia and Maya said and just enjoy myself. I was wearing this beautiful silky dress that showed all the rounds and hollows of my body, I looked cute with my new bangs, my makeup was done, my nails were freshly painted, and I was waiting for the man of my dreams to take me out on a date. Instead of wasting my energy with nerves and unwarranted worries, I decided to push it all back, so when I heard Garon walking through the front door, I walked to him with a smile on my face.

There was a moment when I stopped in the door frame and he looked up at me, when time stopped. Something in his eyes—some sort of burning desire and awe—took my breath away and in that second, I did feel like the most beautiful girl in the world. No one had ever made me feel like that.

“Pina.” He sighed my name.

“I’ve changed my hair.” I said to him.

“I can see.” He came closer, walking like a wolf cornering his next meal. “Come here.”

I blinked, confused. “I’m here.”

His arms chained me to him tightly enough that I knew there was no way out of that hug. It didn’t matter because there was no place I’d rather have been.

“Guido and Giorgio grilled me all day. They wanted to drill discipline and responsibility in my head, all in one day.” He let his head fall on my shoulder and I started stroking the back of his neck. “It was fine for a while, but then Guido spoke about the Caputo legacy and how it’s on our shoulders to fix what Fabiano broke.”

“Did it make you feel overwhelmed?”

“It made me feel like a fucking fraud. I have no claim to their legacy, not after everything.”

I sucked in a breath, not knowing how to comfort him. I knew Garon had some troubles even before Ariana came into the picture. Garon’s lifestyle was never to his father’s liking and it brought up a lot of tensions. I hoped that now, with Fabiano dead and buried, it would be easier for him to get on the same page with his brothers.

“Andra tutto bene, amore mio29.” I kissed his temple without releasing my grip on him.

“I know because when I walked through the door and saw you, all the darkness scattered.”

“The darkness?”

He chuckled, the bitter sound dripping from his lips like poison. “There’s a lot of darkness inside me, Pina and lots of secrets. I’m afraid you’ve made a mistake when you decided to fall in love with me. You should have chosen Gaspino or Giorgio. A better man. A better Caputo.”

“No.” I shook my head almost violently. “It was you or no one, Garon.”

“I’m a broken mess. You have no idea…”

I was starting to see that. Something was eating him from the inside and it was more than his party animal life.

“Well, you’re my broken mess.”

He raised his head only enough to get access to my mouth and devoured me with one kiss. It was slow, Garon taking his time to delight himself with my taste and I did the same. It promptly turned into a full on make out session and I was pushing my body into his and trying to get my hands under his shirt.

“Easy,Piccolina.” He grabbed my wrists and kissed them. “I promised you some fun.”

“I will. If you take me upstairs and make love to me.” My entire body is on fire. I lusted over Garon before, but the pregnancy hormones were already making me want to eat him alive.

“Let me take you out first. You look too good in this dress not to show around.”
