“Still think you can’t raise a child with me?”

“I guess it’s for the better. I get to keep all the desserts.” She leaned in for a kiss and I gladly welcomed her lips on mine.

It was rare for Pina to make the first move towards me. She was always eager to welcome me in her beautiful body, but she always waited for me to make the first move, almost like she was waiting to see if I was tired of her yet. I couldn’t blame her; I barely believed myself when I said I’d changed, that I belonged to only one woman and I was ready to be a family man, but I didn’t need just another warm body when she was giving me more than I knew I had a right to ask for. With Pina, I didn’t crave the sex because it numbed my mind, it was just the opposite. When I was with her, I wanted to remember, Iwantedto feel everything from the fucking wrecking orgasm to the quiet that fell over me after that. Having her come to me, see the same desire that was torturing me reflected in her eyes, was fucking amazing, so I kissed her until she dropped her gelato in favor of my shoulders.

“You,” I grabbed her jaw and looked deep into her chocolate eyes, “I could kiss you for the rest of my life.” Surprise could be heard in my voice, but only because I was stunned with the fact that I’ve had her under my nose for years. Why did I ignore this woman when she was tailor-made for me?

“Same.” The song changed toSarà perché ti amoand Pina jumped to her feet, almost squeaking. It caught me with my guard off because in all the years I’d known her, I’d never seen her get excited over Ricchi e Poveri. “I love this song. I’m going to dance.”

“Go ahead.”

She joined the crowd and jumped around with happy moves, a smile shining on her face, while I laid back and gulped eagerly from the champagne. Tonight was alien to me. I was no stranger to parties or loud music and crowds, but by now, I would have been high out of my mind, instead of sipping bubbly. If I would have walked a few streets down, I could walk in any of the luxury clubs where there was always a VIP table saved for me, get served with an assortment of hard liquor, drugs, and women, and party until my body would give up. Instead I was sitting on the street, on my ass, with Pina Bernoulli who was having the time of her life and I had no desire to be anywhere else.

I’d gone through half of my bottle when Pina decided to throw away her delicate sandals and left the ad-hoc dance floor in favor of the… fountain nearby. I followed her with my eyes, not believing what I was seeing. Suddenly, she was dancing in the fucking rain. Well, not actual rain, but the water from the fountain was showering her glistening skin while she was laughing and moving to the song. Because it got soaked, that dress that was already too damn sexy started clinging to her body like another layer of skin. She looked like a nymph and I wasn’t the only one noticing it. A damn army of men gathered around her, chanting at her feet. That made me move my ass to her.

I pushed my way through the wall of men and jumped straight into the shallow water of the fountain, my shoes and expansive suit pants getting ruined in the process. My vision was fogged by a sheer champagne veil, but I wasn’t drunk, just tipsy enough to not give a damn about anything.ExceptPina. I grabbed her and pulled her into a wild kiss, claiming her in front of God and everybody. She giggled and laced her fingers in my hair, opening her mouth wide for me.

“Fuck them.” I growled.

“What?”

“You’ve attracted an audience,Piccolina.” I nodded to the men whistling at her.

She giggled. “Well, this is a first.” She was always in the shadow of her sister and now she finally got to shine on her own. Her delight at being admired should have make me happy, but the only thing it achieved was pissing me off.

“And alast. I don’t like it.” With one arm still tightly around her I used my free hand to pull my gun from where it was hanging on my belt and fired it a couple times in the air with no warning.

Pina flinched, covered her ears, and hid her face in my chest. “What the hell, Garon?”

I smirked, watching the chaos created around us. All the men salivating over her were scattering like cowards.

“I didn’t like them looking at you. You’re mine.”

“You’re insane.” She blinked, eyes wild, but also trying to hide a spark of excitement. “Women were looking at you too. They always are.”

“So?”

“So you don’t see me firing guns.” Without a word, I handed her the weapon and she took it, but held it like it was about to bite her. “No, thank you.”

“No? Do you not care when other women look at me. When their hungry eyes are biting into my skin like they have a right over my body. Because it sure bothered me when those men were looking at you.”

With cold flames burning in her eyes, Pina grabbed my shirt and pulled me down to her lips. We kissed again, possessive and impatient to fill each other’s taste, and while her tongue was making its way inside my mouth, she raised her hand and fired. She kept pulling the trigger until the clip was empty and we were both out of breath. When she was finished, we were alone in thepiazzeta, the only sounds around us being the laugh of one of the food cart owners who was local and knew who I was, and the police sirens.

“Oh, no.” Pina whispered when a carabinieri car halted to an abrupt stop and two officers got out with their guns drown.

“Drop the gun!” One of them yelled, making Pina throw away my very rare, very expensive Swedish 9mm.

She looked at me almost crying, terrified.

“It’s OK.” I whispered before collecting my gun and turning to face thecarabinieri. Both officers were friends of thefamiglia. “Yell at her again,Lugotenente32Cesar, and you and I will have a problem.”

“SignoreCaputo?” They both lowered their guns. My brother Giovani was the Don of thefamiglia, he was the one giving all the orders, but no one was more familiar with Palermo law enforcement than I was. After all, I was the one getting in trouble all the time.

“Good evening. You got here fast.”

“We were out on patrol and this area is a tourist attraction. We don’t usually expectproblemsaround here.” We had an understanding, thefamigliasand thecarabinieri, they stayed back, as long as business was kept away from the streets in the center of the city.

“No problems here. Just my girl getting a little excited with the gun.”
