“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” She started the car. “I’ve been replaced by my own brother.”

When we made it to the gates, Santo and Arno were waiting by their car, but since Grazia already had a tail, I told them to stay home. This was also something we’d planned in advance because I couldn’t risk one of them going to Garon to tattle.

Dr. Maria Niccolo’s office was a very sweet place. She only worked with pregnant mothers so the whole place was pink with cute murals with babies on the walls. The way it was decorated gave the place something painfully comfortable about it and it put me at ease. Dr. Niccolo was the one who took care of Rebeca Caputo during all her pregnancies, so I had full trust in her. She wouldn’t have laid a finger on Giovani’s wife if he hadn’t vetted her thoroughly.

The receptionist recognized me from past visits and smiled.

“Miss Bernoulli, welcome.” She was a nice woman, in her late thirties, beautiful and warm. “Mr. Caputo is not here today?”

“No, not today. I’ve asked my best friend to come with me instead.”

“Too bad. He is very nice to look at. You two will make a beautiful baby.”

“Healthy too, I hope.”

“Of course. You’re in good hands here.” She tapped something on her computer. “Your appointment is in fifteen minutes, but we had a cancellation, so Dr. Niccolo can take you now.”

“Great, thank you.”

Grazia and I walked in together and found Dr. Niccolo at her desk, reading through a brochure.

“Pina, it’s good to see you.” She looked behind me and smiled. “Grazia, hello. How’s Rebeca doing?” Grazia was here with her sister-in-law more than once.

“Exhausted.” She smiled. “Little Grazia is keeping them on their toes.” Little Grazia was Giovani’s new baby, named after her aunt and godmother. Everyone called her Gigi, except for Grazia who wanted everyone to know she had a baby named after her. At only two weeks old, she had an entire family wrapped around her little fingers, myself included. I’ve seen a lot of babies, but Gigi was so adorable it was almost painful to look at her.

“Are you ready for another niece or nephew?” Dr. Niccolo asked.

“Oh, yes. I’m pretty sure I can bully Garon into naming this one after me too.” My friend joked.

“Hey,” I said, “it’s my decision too.”

“You’re my best friend. Don’t you want your baby named after me?”

“ThreeGrazias? I think it’s too much,amica34.”

“You might be right.” She agreed. “So, Maria, you think you can tell us what the gender is today?”

“If the baby is in the right position, sure. Pina’s far along enough.”

Grazia helped me get on the table and prepped me herself, that’s how familiar she was with the procedure. Dr. Niccolo noticed too.

“How long until I have you as my patient, Grazia?”

“Not long. I’ve been taking the vitamins you gave me.”

I blinked. “Vitamins? For what?”

“Ah, just a few supplements for reproductive health, that’s all.”

“Are you trying to…” It made sense. Salvatore and Grazia have been together for a long time and I knew they both wanted children.

“Not yet, but Salvatore is getting impatient, especially with everyone around us popping babies out. I convinced him to let me open the ballet school first and make sure I have enough teachers to run the place when I’ll be pregnant.”

“And he agreed?” I asked. The school was in construction and I knew Grazia’s plans for that place were very grand. It might take some time to take it to fruition.

“Nope.” She sighed. “He wants kids and I do too, so I’m looking for a project manager to take over the school so we can focus on our family next year.”

Dr. Niccolo clapped her hands. “That’s great. Just give me a call when you’re ready.” Her attention shifted to me. “But let’s take care of Pina first. Are you ready?”
