“When the man you love asks you to marry him, you say yes, Pina.” She admonished me. “The whole world was trying to stop me from marrying Salvatore, but I did it because I love him.”

“I know, but Garon and I… I’m not sure where we stand. We don’t have what you and Salvatore do.”

“He is trying. He asked you to marry him. It sounds to me like you’re waiting for a better offer.”

God, she could be infuriatingly stubborn when she wanted to.

“I’m waiting for him to love me too!” I yelled back. “I’m waiting to see if when the baby is born, he still wants me, because if whatever he’s feeling now passes Garon would end up married to a woman he doesn’t want and I will be miserable if he’d push me away.”

Grazia took a beat. “That’s a little hypocritical, don’t you think?”

“Excuse me?”

“You’re afraid he might push you away and hurt you, so you did that exact thing to him?”

“No, I tried to explain, but he didn’t let me.” He fucked me and left me. “I didn’t want to hurt him, Grazia, but would you marry someone who doesn’t love you? Yes, we were so happy for the past few months, but I’m not sure he’d still want the same thing if I weren’t pregnant.”

“If you worry about the ifs, Pina, you’ll never be happy. Trust me.”

“But if we get married and my husband—the man I’ve loved since I first discovered what love is—will throw me away and walk out on me, it would destroy me, Grazia.”

My friend sighed. “I know, but Pina, that fear will never pass. He could swear eternal love to you and you would still feel like you’re a moment away from losing him. And it’s terrifying.”

“We just need a little more time.”

“Sasa loves me. He loved me through thick and thin, he loved me with everything in his heart and he will until the day he dies. Don’t think that I don’t worry about losing him. I trust my husband with my life, but sometimes I can’t help but think what would I do if he stopped. It’s the price we pay when we fall in love.”

“I don’t like it.” I said, defeated.

“If it’s not worth being worried about losing, then it’s not love.”

“What do I do now?”

“You broke Garon’s heart. I don’t know if he’s in love or not, Pina, but he cares about you. You are the mother of his child, you are his woman, and when he offered himself to you, you turned him down.”

“I…” hearing it from her made me feel miserable. “I didn’t…”

“I know you didn’t mean it, but that’s how you made him feel.”

“I need to talk to him.”

“I know you don’t want to hear this, but he’s probably somewhere drunk out of his mind.”

“You think so.”

“When he’s hurt, he lashes out and then numbs it out. It’s what Garon does. I’ll call my brothers, try and find him.”

“Please, call me if you find anything.”

“I will. Try and calm down, OK? All this drama isn’t good for the baby. Love you.”

“I love you too. I’m really sorry.”

“You don’t have to apologize to me. Salvatore is right, I get too involved in my brother’s life. You two have to work this out and I will try my best to stay out of it.”

“You’re a good friend, Grazia, and a better sister.”

“I know. I’ll call Giovani now and let you know.”
