“You didn’t say that the last time you came to visit. I remember you seeing enough.”

He looked at me like an accomplice, sleek smile spreading on his face, probably rememberingtheorgy.

“I can’t join you tonight, my friend, but I’m sure you’ll find someone to keep you company when it’s my time to return home to my Ella.”

“If you’re taking me to the right place, I will.”

Luca’s laugh boomed down the street and he steered me into a dark side alley.

“Oh, this is the place.”

But it didn’t look likeit. We were sitting in front of a rickety wooden door that couldn’t fit us both, with a rusty metal ring on it and a small window with bars over it.

“What the…?”

Luca knocked and two large men in matching jeans and black t-shirts answered.

“Ah, signore Bianco. We haven’t seen you in a while. Come in,per favore4.” The bouncer said.

When they looked at me, Luca nodded. “He’s my guest tonight. Garon Caputo. Tony is friends with his family.”

That made me frown at his back while we walked inside. “Who is Tony and what does he have to do with my family?”

“Tony Balbano. He’s a boss here in Rome. From what I’ve heard, he’s on good terms with your brother.” He shrugged. “You can’t just walk through the door of this place if you’re not a member or Balbano doesn’t approve.”

I scoffed, looking around me at the narrow tunnel going beneath the building. “I don’t need anyone’s approval. What is this place anyways?”

“A den.”

“A den?”

Luca stopped in front of a red velvet curtain, large and thick, like those I’m used to seeing at my sister’s ballet recitals, and looked at me with a proud look on his face.

“Yes, a den of pleasure and sin. It’s my turn to show you a good time.”

Behind the curtain, I could hear soft jazz music, the volume low enough to allow conversation. It didn’t seem like my scene — my nights were usually loud, with neon lights and smoke shows — but when we walked inside, I realized we weren’t in some underground coffee shop.

The room was tall with tables in the middle, a high stage that was empty now, a long bar made out of dark, polished wood and covered in ivy was at the other end and walls dressed in black and gold. The place was made to exude opulence, from the posh furniture, to the cushioned armchairs, to the fresco painted on the ceiling, to the marble beneath our feet, everything was picked out to make you feel you were surrounded by money and power, but my eyes were busy with other things.

The room was packed with patrons, both men and women, who were sitting at their tables, enjoying some fine drinks, served by some stunning looking women.Toplessstunning looking women.

“Nice start, Bianco.”

“This is just the tip of the iceberg.”

We were escorted by a brunette hostess, also wearing nothing but a tight skirt that barely covered her ass and impossibly high heels. She took us to a side table and before she left, she assured us we’ll get served in a moment, and walked away dragging her fingers along my shoulder.

I jerked my chin at Luca. “What do I need to do to have her under me tonight?”

The haze from the other night was starting to wash away already and I knew what that meant. Once the numbness of the booze was gone and my ears stopped ringing from the music, my thoughts took over. That’s when the headaches and anguish started and I knew that riding a woman for a couple of hours was a good enough distraction.

Fucking, drinking, and parties didn’t kill my darkness, but it got me numb enough to not care. It wasn’t peace, but it was better than being alone with my thoughts.

“Drop a stack of cash in front of her. Most of the girls you see around here will be happy to entertain.”

“You know this from experience?”

“Hell yes. I’ve spent too much time here. Pick one now, or wait for the auction.”
