Garon walked in the house, finding me still hanging around Gaspino’s neck.

“What the hell are you doing?” He frowned at his brother. “Be careful with her, asshole.”

“We’re celebrating. Why the fuck didn’t you tell me you’re having a baby girl?”

“Because I just found out. Mind your own business.”

“My niece is my business.”

“Goliath is waiting for you outside. Go, I need to talk to Pina.”

Gaspino put me down and his face became serious.

“All good?”

“Yeah. It will be.”

“Okay then. Call if you need anything.” Garon nodded in agreement before Gaspino left and we were left alone.

Silently, he came to me, put a hand around my shoulders and guided me to sit on the couch next to him, kissing my forehead.

“Did you kill him?” I asked, even if I shouldn’t have. These things? We don’t talk about them and no one shouldeverask about it.

“No, but I broke as many bones as I could and made your mother watch. The next time he’s in a hundred meters of you, he’ll end up dead.”

I nodded. “I went to talk to him, to tell him to leave. I didn’t want you to have another problem on your hands. I should have stayed home.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“So you’re not mad?”

“No.”

“What about the other thing?” I sighed.

“I’m not mad. I’m not happy about it either. I’ll drop it for now. All I want is for you to be safe and for our baby to be healthy. Maybe one day you’ll tell me what you want and we can revisit the conversation about marriage.”

“I just want you.” I said. I wanted him to love me. I wanted him to be sure I was his forever.

“You have me. I’m not going anywhere even if you won’t marry me. I’ll be right here when you make up your mind.”

I put my arms around him and squeezed him hard, finally feeling like the dust was settling after the shaky days we’d had.

“I’m here too. I’m not going anywhere.” I assured him. With or without a ring on my finger, I belonged to him entirely. Forever.

“I told Giovani the truth about my father.”

I inhaled sharply and pulled back to see his face. He seemed content.

“What did he say?”

“He knew all along. My father had a paternity test hidden away and Giovani found it when he became Don. You were right all along.” He took a deep breath. “I showed them who I am and I still have a family. He said it doesn’t change anything.”

“It doesn’t. You’re still the same man, the same Garon they love so much.” I touched his face and put my forehead on his. “I’m just glad this secret is not pressing on your soul anymore.”

His phone started ringing in his pocket and when he pulled it out, we saw Grazia was calling.

“Fuck!” He cursed.
