Without a word, she snatched the strap from him and draped it over her shoulder. “Lead the way,” she muttered.

“Uh uh.” He shook his head. “I’ll follow you.”

Desi sniffed. “Have it your way.”

She turned on her heel and headed towards the back of the manor.

Feeling his eyes drill a hole into the back of her head as they walked, Desi quickened her speed to the solarium. The sooner they got there the better as far as she was concerned, she would tell everyone at once that she was leaving. To where, she had no idea, but far enough from the jerk that was on her tail.

“There she is,” Kim called out as Desi took the first step into the room. Everyone turned to look at her on cue, making her feel like a bug under a microscope.

Abbi came to her, took hold of her hands, and smiled, “I want to thank you for making dinner, everyone loved it. Do you think you’re up to cooking for a hundred people?”

Desi didn’t know what to make of it, she wasn’t used to being complimented on her cooking skills, or anything for that matter. As much as she wanted to say no, she couldn’t bring herself to it, “I could, but I will need help, I can’t do it alone.”

Relieved, Abbi said, “Let’s talk about the particulars, shall we?” Without waiting for a response, she hooked Desi by the arm and guided her to the table. “Lane, can you get Desi something to drink?” Abbi looked at her, “Sit. You didn’t eat, did you? Grab her a plate of food too.”

“Really, I’m fine.”

Ben pulled out a chair, sat down, looked at Desi standing there. Chuckling, he said, “You’re best to just go with it when she’s on a roll.”

“What do you want to drink?” Lane asked, staring at her with such an intensity she thought for sure he could read her thoughts. She sat down and dropped her gaze to the table, “Um, water is fine.”

Abbi twisted in her chair and took a notebook and pen from her purse, setting it on the table she turned to the first page and clicked her pen, “Okay, first things first. Ben and I have decided something simple for the main course.”

Destiny mumbled her thanks as Lane set a plate full of food in front of her along with a bottle of water. Picking up the fork and knife she cut a bite sized piece of roast beef and popped it in her mouth and chewed. She was mid swallow when Ben said, “Abbi love, a full course turkey dinner is not simple.”

Abbi swung her gaze to Destiny as she started coughing. “Are you okay?” Concerned, Abbi got up, went around the table and patted her on the back. When she realised, she was of no help, she looked around the room for her sister. “Ben, find Kim now!”

Lane was clearing a table when he heard the commotion, dropping the plates he rushed over to Desi and pulled her out of the chair. Stepping behind her, he placed his fist into her abdomen and gave quick upward thrusts until the food came flying out.

Destiny gasped in a lungful of air as he held her within the circle of his arms. Suddenly she became aware of how strong he was and of his rock-hard body, warm against her backside.

“Is she okay? Are you okay Desi?” Abbi yelled.

“She’s not deaf mom, and yes she’s fine,” Lane said, dropping his arms to his side.

“Well, I just wondered, I didn’t know it was a common thing to hold someone after they started breathing.”

Desi sat down and opened her water, taking a sip she looked at Lane through her lashes. Taking first aid as a teen she knew it wasn’t a common thing to do and it shook her to the core.

“Where is she?” Kim came rushing into the room followed by Ben.

Abbi sat in her chair and said, “She’s fine, Lane took care of her.”

Desi raised her brows and thought to herself that he certainly did.

“Okay good,” Kim said. “Lane, can you give me a hand clearing this mess up? I stuck everyone else doing the dishes,” she cackled.

He nodded without saying a word and went off to give her a hand.

“Did the thought of cooking a meal the size of a thanksgiving dinner scare you, Destiny?” Ben asked, sitting beside Abbi.

“We are getting married on Thanksgiving Day, it’s only right, right?” Abbi asked, uncertainty creeping into her voice.

Destiny looked at the two of them sitting across from her. Of all the wedding venues that a couple of their status could get married at they chose an old inn in a tiny ass village, feeding their guests a turkey dinner. It didn’t make a lick of sense to her. “Um, do you mind if I ask why that day?”

“We have so many things to be thankful for that we thought it would be the perfect day,” Ben replied, gazing at his soon to be wife.
