“Whatever.” Not wanting to admit to her boss that she was going to bail on her, Desi hurried on, “It doesn’t matter, the place is big enough, I’m sure we can avoid each other. Anyway, I didn’t want to leave without thanking you and Dean for giving me a chance.”

Kim leaned back in her chair and at the top of her lungs yelled, “Dean!”

They could hear him running down the hall towards them, then skidded to a stop as he scanned the kitchen with a wild look on his face. “What?! What’s wrong?!”

Kim laughed, “Nothing. Desi is getting her stuff to move to the spa.”

He swiped a hand across his forehead. “Geezus woman! I thought something was wrong.”

Desi looked at him, and said, “I also wanted to thank you for letting me stay here.”

Dean smiled. “Of course, it’s been a pleasure. So, when did you want to get going?”

“Oh, you don’t have to take me. I don’t have very much, honestly.”

Kim got up and went to the back door, opening it, she said, “Have you seen the sky out there? There’s a storm coming and by the looks of those clouds it’s going to be a bad one.” To prove her point, a whirlwind of leaves passed by the open door.

“On second thought, I’d love a ride,” Desi laughed.

Dean walked over and slammed the door shut. “Good thing because Kim packed a few bags of her own for you. Come on, let’s get you moved.”

“You didn’t have to do that Kim; you’ve already been too kind.” Desi smiled, “But thank you, I appreciate it.”

“It’s just some towels and stuff... and besides, I wanted to. Even though you haven’t been here for long, I like to think of you as the daughter I’ll never have.” Seeing the tears form in the young woman’s eyes, Kim hurriedly said, “Come on, let’s get going before the storm hits.”

Her words made Desi choke up, something that normally wouldn’t happen because she wouldn’t allow it, but for some reason, was happening a lot lately. Wiping a tear from her eye, she nodded. “Yes, let’s go, besides, I want to be moved in before Lane,” she laughed, as they followed Dean out of the room.

Chapter 8

Lane pulled his mom’sSUV into the back laneway of the spa and killed the engine just as the first rumble of thunder rolled through. He cast his eyes to the sky and saw a huge shelf cloud making its way right for him, making sure the windows were rolled up, he got out. Shutting the door, he went to the trunk and retrieved the bags of groceries he had picked up at Mack’s. Slamming it shut, he jogged to the house and up the back porch steps and somehow managed to get in the door a second before it started to pour buckets.

He was putting the cold items in the fridge when he saw out the window Dean’s truck pulling up beside the SUV. He could see Kim in the front passenger seat, which left Destiny in the back of the club cab. Tossing the bags onto the table, he went out to give them a hand with her stuff.

Dodging the raindrops, he got there as Kim opened her door. “Here, take this.” She tossed a grocery bag at him. “And this,” she thrusted a plant in his direction, then jumping down onto the ground, she hissed, “Dean, I swear to all that is holy that you either get a smaller truck or a ladder for me.” She busied herself opening the small back door behind her seat, muttering, “One of these days I’m going to break a leg getting out of this thing.”

Dean laughed at her as he removed Desi’s bags from behind his seat, “Stop your bickering and let’s get in the damn house before this storm really hits.”
