“Where is the ground?” she asked stupidly.

He stretched forward and aimed the light over the edge. “About thirty feet... down there.”

She backed up and looked at him. “Are you sure that app is right?”

“Yeah.”

“But... Does that mean... she fell down there?”

Lane shook his head. “I thought that at first, but it keeps moving. That means she’s down there, somewhere.”

Desi opened her mouth and yelled, “Abbi!”

“Don’t do that!”

She looked at him like he was crazy. “Why not? She could be hurt.”

“Because we don’t know if she is alone. If she is and we can’t get to her, something else could. And if someone is with her, they could do something to her.”

“Oh. But—”

“No but’s. We need to head back to the house and fast. My phone is at 10% and I don’t want to lose the signal. As long as I have this going, we know where she is.”

“What about the police, shouldn’t we tell them?”

“Not until my phone is charged, we don’t need them screwing this up.”

Desi shook her head not believing he was just going to leave his mother down there.

“Trust me it’s fine. She will be fine—” Ducking as a flash of light came from below, Lane grabbed a hold of Desi’s hand and pulled her down with him to the ground. He put a finger to his lips, silently conveying the message for her to keep quiet.

He leaned towards her so that his mouth was against her ear. “Don’t say a word,” he whispered. “I need you to slowly shimmy backwards, aim for fifteen feet.” When she nodded, he added, “But do it as quiet as you can. I’ll be right behind you.”

Desi did as she was told. Not daring to even breathe she held her breath the entire time and only stopped when she felt Lane tapping her hand.

“That’s good,” he said softly, standing. He held his hand out and helped her off the ground. “C’mon, let’s get out of here.”

They made it back to the village square in time to see a few people were still milling around.

“There’s Kim, and them,” she pointed.

They were standing under a light post in front of Mack’s store talking to him.

“Don’t tell them what happened,” Lane said, under his breath.

“I won’t.”

“There you two are!” Ava said, as they approached. “Did you find anything?”

Lane shrugged. “A few footprints on the road back there. But that was it. What did the police say?”

“Nothing, they were useless,” Kim said, miserably.

Lane knew full well that would be the case. But casually he asked, “Oh. Why was that?”

“They told us to wait until daylight. How dumb is that?”

“They’re right. It would be different if the land were flat and not so many trees. It’s safer for everyone if it’s light out,” Mark said, leaning against the light post.
