“What?! How did you know?”

“I set it so that it would ping if it moved ten feet. It started going off like crazy. Are you ready?”

“Yeah,” she nodded, grabbing a jacket she pulled it on. “Let’s go.”

“There’s one problem...” Lane said, as they raced down the front staircase.

“What?”

“You’re not afraid of riding on the back of my bike, are you?”

Desi had never been on a motorcycle in her life, so she couldn’t really answer truthfully.

Only one way to find out. “No.” She shook her head, “I’m fine with it.”

He locked the front door of the spa and together they walked to the staircase on the hill. “Good. Because I left Mom’s car keys in the house, and I don’t want to wake Ben up.” He pulled a flashlight from his pocket and aimed the beam down the hill side. “Give me your hand, these steps can be tricky at night.”

Together as one, they moved as quickly as they could down the steep hillside. “Try not to make any noise once we get to their house, the dogs will have a fit.”

Coming to the bottom of the stairs, they ran across the road to Ben and Abbi’s house.

Lane looked at her and said, “I need you to put this on your back.” He took the backpack and handed it to her. “You wait here, I’ll be right back.”

Desi slung the bag over her shoulders and looked around, her eyes adjusting to the darkness. She was trying to think of what could possibly be in the bag when she started to get creeped out by the second. Every bush and tree felt like there was something behind it, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce on her. She was so relieved when Lane came around the corner pushing the motorcycle, she felt like running up to him to give him a hug. But she didn’t. She waited for him to come to her.

He swung his leg over the seat and straddled the machine. Taking his helmet off the handlebar where it hung, he handed it to her. “Here put this on,” he whispered, leaning close to her ear. “Let me know if it fits.”

She put it on and found it to be a bit loose. Tapping him on the shoulder she shook her head, “It’s too big.”

“Come here.” He pulled her so she was facing him, “There’s an air pump right here.” He took her hand and guided her to where it was. “Push on that until you get a better fit.”

Desi did as he instructed as he snapped the chin strap in place and tightened it. “Good now?”

She gave him a thumbs up.

Lane pulled the visor down on the helmet then looked over his shoulder. They were far enough away from the house. He ordered, “Get on,” as he pulled in the clutch and started the bike.

Desi held onto his shoulder as she swung her leg over and settled herself behind him then froze. When she said she didn’t have a problem riding on the back of his bike, never in her wildest dreams did she imagine her crotch would be hugging his butt.

Lane let the clutch out and the bike jerked forward. Something Desi was not prepared for. With the weight of the helmet and her not knowing where to put her hands, she flung back and would have fallen off the back of the bike if it hadn’t been for Lane applying the brake.

Unfortunately for him, she wasn’t prepared for the abrupt stop either and smacked him in the back of the head.

“Helmet works!” she announced jubilantly.

“Sonofabitch!,” he growled, rubbing the spot where the helmet made contact. “What the hell is the matter with you? Put your arms around me for cripes sake and hold on!”

When she did, she felt him slip something into her hands. “I need you to hold my phone. Do you think you can do that without dropping it?”

He felt her nod against his back and with that, he released the brake and clutch at the same time and set off into the darkness.

They travelled east out of the village, onto a road that had trees growing on either side of it making it feel like they were in a tunnel. Desi would love to see it in the daytime with the leaves showing off their Fall colours.

Lane slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road and guided the bike into what looked like an overgrown laneway. Killing the motor, he said, “You can get off now.”

“Why?!” came her muffled response as she felt him take the phone out of her hands.

Her only thought was that he was dumping her out in the middle of nowhere.
