“I’m sorry, that was my fault, I should have left the light with you.”

“Where were you? Did you see something?”

“Ah, no. Nature called; I was taking a...”

She chuckled. “I get it, you don’t have to explain it to me.” Scratching her head, she slid off his lap. “Do you know what time it is?”

Lane looked at his watch, “3:30. I guess we should try to get some sleep.”

Desi took off her jacket, yawning the whole time. Folding it in half and then again, she placed it on the floor of the tent and laid down. Patting the spot beside her, grinning, she said, “You can share my pillow if you like.”

He laid down beside her, and said, “I got a better idea. You can use me as a pillow.”

Desi started to balk but he ignored her and pulled her towards him. Tucking her at his side, he lifted his head, took her jacket, and laid his head on it. “Better?”

She nodded as she pulled the sleeping bag up to cover them. She wanted in the worst kind of way to kiss him but didn’t dare. Instead, she looked up at him and softly said, “Goodnight.”

Apparently, Lane wanted to kiss her too. Because the next thing she knew, his lips were on hers. She moaned softly as he pulled her on top of him, his arousal pressing against her pelvic bone made her instantly ache.

“Are you still okay with this?” he asked hotly against her lips.

Desi nodded rapidly, “Yes...”

He turned her over onto her back and kneeled between her legs. As he pulled his shirt off, his eyes never left hers. “Light on or off?”

“Off,” she said.

“Are you sure?” It would be a first for him if she started having another panic attack in the middle of having sex. “You won’t freak out, will you?”

“No!” she laughed. “I’m not afraid of the dark.”

“Fine. But if you start, I’m turning it back on,” he smiled at her as the tent went black.

Desi reached out for him and ran her hands over his chest. As they trailed over each defined muscle, she couldn’t understand why he would want to be with her. Maybe it had been a while since he’d been with a woman... or...

“I know what you’re thinking, and you can stop it right now,” Lane said, tugging on her shirt hem.

“What?!”

“You think you’re not good enough. Stop that. You’re a beautiful, sensual woman. And against my better judgement, one that I want to get to know.”

Desi sat up so quickly that her forehead smacked into his jaw. Through gritted teeth Lane cursed, “Geezus woman! I swear you’re trying to knock me out.”

“Sorry! Damnit, that hurt,” she rubbed her head and found a goose egg starting to form. “How did you know what I was thinking?”

There was a rustling sound and then the tent filled with light once again. Lane put the flashlight in the corner and looked at her. “Because I asked you if you were going to keep your clothes on and you never answered me...I could tell you weren’t listening.”

“Oh...” she looked at him guiltily.

He lifted a strand of her hair and let it slip between his fingers. He searched her face and then said, “Yeah. Your ex really did a number on you, didn’t he?”

She raised a shoulder in a half shrug. “I don’t know.”

Lane nodded and slipped his hand around to the back of her neck. Leaning forward as he pulled her towards him, his eyes settled on her lips. “I do, and I’m changing that right now...”

He dipped his head and against her mouth, he murmured, “The light stays on,” before claiming her mouth. His tongue slid between her lips, tangling with hers. Breaking it off he took hold of the hem of her shirt again and pulled it over her head. “You’re bad for me you know that?”

“Why am I bad for you?” she panted, pulling her pants off.
