Chapter 15
“What is going on?”Ava said, tossing her phone onto the table.
“What is it now?” Luke asked, filling a mug with coffee. He’d arrived a half hour ago, waking up everyone in the house with his relentless knocking and ringing of the doorbell.
They were all sitting in Ben’s kitchen drinking coffee while Dean, Mark, and Kim cooked breakfast.
“Now Lane isn’t answering his phone. Straight to voicemail... just like mom’s,” she sighed, rubbing her forehead.
“How long have you been trying to reach him?” Kim asked, pouring a bowl full of whisked eggs into a frying pan.
“Since last night... I remembered he and mom had some sort of app they used to find each other, I wanted to ask him what it was.”
Pulling out his phone, Luke sat his mug onto the counter and Ben who was feeding Anna, dropped the spoon. Both said at the same time. “Where are you?”
Confused, Kim looked at Mark and Dean. “Are they alright?” she asked only to jump when Ava yelled, “YES! That’s it! Do you two have it?”
“Why the hell didn’t I think of that last night?” Ben muttered, pulling out his phone.
“What is it?” Dean asked, turning the burner off he dumped the sausages he’d been frying onto a paper towel to drain.
Ava quickly moved to Ben’s side as he opened the app and put in Abbi’s phone number. Luke started his search inputting Lane’s number and showed Kim as she looked over his shoulder.
“There she is,” Ben murmured, not believing his eyes. “According to this, she’s five and a half miles away.”
Ava looked at him. “That can’t be right, can it?”
“It’s always been accurate before, I can’t see it not being now,” Ben replied.
“Too bad we didn’t have that when you went missing Ben,” Mark said. “Would have been a helluva lot easier in finding you.”
Ben nodded, remembering the hell he had gone through. He could only hope Abbi was fairing out better. “True. What does yours say Luke?”
“It’s showing Lane to be four miles... awayish... give or take one.”
