“I bet she heard the dogs barking,” Luke remarked.

Ava groaned, “Oh my god, get back in the truck Desi.”

They all fell silent as Tim and Lane made their way back to the truck.

Ava jumped up as they watched Mark slowly back up, “Good lord, they are leaving her there!”

“C’mon.” Dean started walking towards the building. “We gotta see if we can find her before someone else does.”

They made their way to the edge of the bush, where it met the yard. They stopped in the shadows and were just about to continue into the yard when a door swung open, and a man walked out carrying a gun. Standing still as statues, they watched as he took up his watch, right there in front of the door. They were stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they moved at all he would no doubt see them and shoot first then ask questions later.

––––––––

DESI BACKED UP SLOWLYas he was facing away from her. If she was quiet, she could get enough distance between them that she could turn around and run in the opposite direction. She hoped. Taking a deep breath and one more step, she turned around and ran. Only to hit a brick wall. One that grabbed hold of her, covered her mouth and dragged her under the umbrella of a weeping willow tree. She almost started to cry when she looked at her captor and saw his worried blue eyes staring down into her face. It was Lane.

He wanted to replace his mouth with his hand and kiss her senseless. But it wasn’t the time nor the place. Nor did he want her thinking he wanted to. But he did. He told himself it was just the adrenaline kicking in, since the second he’d discovered her gone he’d been in a panic. Only he wasn’t sure about that. Shaking his head, he dropped his hand to hers and pulled on it. Together they made their way to the wall of the building and flattened themselves against it next to a door. Lane turned the doorknob and found it gave way. Praying the door was well oiled he pushed it open and peered inside.

It looked like an old barn and nothing out of the ordinary as far as they could tell. That was until Desi pointed to a pole. He was just about to ask her what about it when he saw. There, laying on the floor was a cellphone. Lane pulled his own from his pocket and silently cursed. He forgot it was dead.

Looking at Desi, he mouthed the words ‘Stay here,’ then took off towards the phone. Snatching it up, he saw that it was Abbi’s.

“Who the hell are you two?” A voice boomed from above.

Both Desi and Lane looked up to see a head and a gun peeking over the edge of a hayloft. “You stay right there while I get down.”

As if.

Lane took off running one way and Desi the other as shots rang out.

As she went down the hallway, she noticed several doors along the corridor, trying the first one, she shoved at it and was shocked to find the doorknob turned in her hand. Pushing it open, she quickly closed it behind her and stood there with her hands on it catching her breath.

“Desi?”

She spun around at the sound of her name being called to see Abbi standing there holding a screwdriver.

“Oh my God! Abbi?!” She rushed over to her side. “What are you doing in this room?”

“They threw me in here I think a day ago. Why are you here?”

“Lane and I ran—”

“Hold up. Did you say Lane?” Abbi asked, a look of worry flashing across her face. “Where is he?”

“He took off running in the other direction. I don’t know where he went. C’mon, let’s go find him.”

“How? The door only opens from the outside.”

“What makes you say that?” Desi asked.

“Go ahead, try it.”

Desi did and sure enough, Abbi was right. She groaned. “Damnit. Who the hell puts a self-locking door handle in a barn?” Rubbing her forehead, she looked at Abbi. “What were you going to do with that screwdriver?”

“I was planning on getting out of here.”

“Can I see it please?” Abbi handed it to her, and she walked over to the door, looking at the hinges. Fitting the screwdriver between the pin and the plate, she banged on the end of it with her palm until she was able to work it loose. “Yes! It’ll work!”

Abbi rushed over to hold the door in place as Desi worked on the pins. “I see your mind thinks like mine.”
