Lane ignored her question with one of his own. “Where did the guy go that was chasing me?”

Abbi backed up and looked at him. “Who cares? Desi is right, we need to get out of here now!”

He nodded, and took her phone out of his pocket, handing it to her, he said, “Of course, you’re right mom. Let’s go.”

Desi stood there and stared at Lane wondering if he hit himself in the head. To say he was acting strangely was an understatement.

“I have to call Ben,” Abbi said, putting the phone to her ear.

“No, don’t!” Lane grabbed the phone out of her hand.

Abbi snatched it back. “What the hell is wrong with you Lane?”

“Everyone is out there looking for you, including Ben. You calling him could attract unwanted attention,” he explained. “Follow me, there may be a better way out of here, I just need to check.”

Abbi and Desi did as they were told and followed him into the grain enclosure he had been waiting in. They watched as he walked to the outer wall to where there were planks of wood encased in the cement.

“Okay. I think I can break through this,” he said, glancing at Desi.

She was getting more confused by the moment with this man. One minute he was glaring at her, the next he was talking like it never happened.

“Okay,” she nodded. “Hopefully, it leads outside.

“Only one way to find out,” he said, with a wink and a sly smile on his lips.

Desi licked her own and nodded. “Can I talk to you for a minute? Abbi, excuse us for a second?”

Abbi crossed her arms over her chest and said, “By all means, please find out what the hell his problem is.”

Desi smiled at that and grabbed Lane by the arm. Crossing the hallway to another enclosure, Desi turned and looked at him. “What happened, did you hit your head or something?”

Lane shot her a look. He supposed he did need to offer her an explanation. But how did he tell her he was fighting every urge in him to not be falling in love with her. Nope it wasn’t happening and the only way for him to not tell her was to accuse her.

“Not at all,” he said, in way of an answer. “You wanna know what’s wrong with me? I saw your ex, that’s what’s wrong. And I find it odd how you just bailed out of the truck. Why did you bail out of the truck Desi? Did you see him too?”

Desi stood in shock. She knew the chance of seeing Brian here was great but to hear that he really was here, reinforced everything she had thought, and that meant Nala was in danger.

Desi narrowed her eyes. “What are you implying?”

“I think you know...”

In hindsight, Lane should have known that wasn’t the way to avoid admitting his feelings. Especially when Desi hauled off and punched him in the face.

“Ohmygosh. I hit you!”

Lane stood there rubbing his jaw. He deserved that and was about to tell her so when she continued, “I’ve never hit anyone in my life!”

“It’s justifiable. You have quite the right hook,” he laughed.

“It’s not funny!”

“Sure, it is,” he said, pulling her into his arms. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have—”

“Psst!”

They looked around to the entry and saw Abbi standing there, waving at them to come to her.

“Hurry up!” she said, then disappeared.
