“Mark is coming to get me,” he answered without taking his eyes off the show he was watching.

“Oh, okay,” she said, with a long face, “Bye then...”

For the life of her Desi couldn’t shake the feeling of an overwhelming sadness. She should be ecstatic, having her cat back, and really, she was, but something was making her feel down.

She turned and walked down the hall to the stairs and headed straight for the back door. Locking the handle, she closed it behind her. With her head bent, she started her walk to the inn.

The uninvited guests had arrived the day after everything had happened, so, Ben, Abbi and Annabelle along with his parents were all staying at the inn. Desi had been there every day, busy cooking while Lane and Nala kept each other company.

It had been a full week since finding her and Abbi and everyone was feeling the effects of the ordeal. Desi chalked her sadness up to that, but deep in her heart she knew it was something more.

The wedding was a little over a week away and she wasn’t looking forward to it. Not because of the food she had to cook but because Lane would be leaving the next day. Needless to say, she had fallen for him. Knowing the feeling wasn’t mutual was something she had come to terms with, after all, they said it from the get-go that neither of them wanted nothing more than a fling.

Shaking her head, she pushed it to the back of her mind and forged on towards the inn.

––––––––

THE OUTSIDE KITCHENdoor opened, and Desi heard Dean say, “Desi the truck is here with the food.”

Looking up from the pan in her hands, she said, “Okay, I’ll be there in just a minute, I just need to pop this quiche into the oven.”

He nodded. “See you out there.”

That was one thing Desi absolutely hated was stock day. It was bad enough having to get all the perishables put away, but to cook while doing it for customers was what sucked about it. Luckily the only customers at the inn were Kim’s family. Untying her apron, she tossed it onto the counter then grabbed her coat from behind the door. When she stepped out it was snowing. Shaking her head at the crazy weather she ran to the truck and skidded to a stop.

“This is the turkeys,” Dean smacked the stack of boxes sitting on a pallet.

Kim joined them and shivered as she stood there. “What the hell shit is this?” she scowled at the snow.

Ignoring her, Desi pursed her lips. She just thought about something no one else had. “Um... you don’t have a freezer down in the basement, do you?”

Dean and Kim stared at each other. “Damnit!” Kim muttered. “I knew we were forgetting something! Didn’t I tell you last night that I was forgetting something?” she looked at Dean for confirmation.

Dean scratched his head. “Yeah, you did. Do you think Mack would have room in the freezers at the store?”

“Possibly,” Desi reached into her back pocket and pulled her phone out. “I’ll give him a call.”

She frowned when she looked at her phone screen. “Umm, Lane called me three times.”

“God, I hope he didn’t fall down.” Kim said, “Call him back. I’ll call Mack.”

Desi nodded and dialed his number. He picked up on the first ring. “Lane? Is everything all right?”

“Yeah, I called because Nala threw up.”

She relaxed at once and said, “Oh? How many times?”

“Just once but it looked like a fur coat.”

Desi burst out laughing. “It’s a fur ball, she’s fine. She does it all the time.”

“No. That’s not normal.”

“Of course it is, you try licking your body and see how you fair afterwards.”

There was silence on the other end for so long that she thought he hung up. “Lane are you still there?”

“Yeah. I was thinking that I’d rather lick your body.”
