Page 75 of Lane's Destiny

Taking a deep breath, she looked to the door, trying to hide the mix of emotions she knew was on her face. Since their argument about her leaving, neither said more than a dozen words to each other and it was only in passing or when he helped with getting the food prepped.

Thankfully, dressed in a dark champagne coloured gown, Kim came out the door, rather quickly, like she was mad. Desi knew she was nervous as hell from the way her lips were set and had to chuckle when she saw Kim trip over the top step. Luckily for Kim, her nephews caught her by the arms so that she didn’t go ass over teakettle and then they sent her tottering down the carpet on her way to the altar.

The image of what could have happened played in Desi’s mind so much that she started laughing uncontrollably. Biting her lip was the only way to stop the mirth from exploding. She heard a cough and casually glanced at Lane, noticing he had to be thinking the same thing. But when he met her eyes, both stopped at once, and looked the other way.

Brit hissed in her ear, “What is wrong with you?”

Clearing her throat, she whispered, “Nothing, I’ll tell you later.”

As the maid of honor, Ava came to the entryway next, also dressed in a champagne-coloured gown but a shade lighter than Kim’s.

As the music changed its tempo announcing the appearance of the bride, Ava stopped and turned to hold her hand out to her mother. Abbi took it and mother and daughter walked to the top of the steps, stopping only long enough for Ava to hand their mother over to her brothers. She continued down the aisle to the altar to stand beside Kim.

Desi teared up at the vision of Abbi in her wedding gown. Keeping with tradition of being a second time bride, she chose the same champagne colour for her dress as the others but hers was off the shoulder. It had a sweetheart neckline, that tapered to her narrow waist and gently flared over her hips to pool at her feet.

The thing that got Desi worked up the most, was that it was completely overlayed with green organza lace that shimmered with every step she took. Tiny embroidered leaves covered the bodice to her waist then scattered like a whirlwind along the skirt. She wore her hair down, while a handmade tiara of tiny white rose buds and baby’s breath sat upon her head, her soft curls flowed gently over her shoulders. She reminded Desi of a fae princess.

Abbi looped arms with both of her sons, then leaned over to whisper in each of their ears. Smiling, she gave Lane a nod and he suddenly dropped Abbi’s arm and walked straight over to Desi.

Feeling like a self-conscious fool, Desi backed up as Lane leaned over close to her ear and whispered, “Mom said the potatoes smell like they’re burning.”

“Oh my gosh, thank you!” She said and made a beeline to the kitchen.

What she didn’t see was Lane watching her walk away with a sad look on his.

But Brit certainly did...

Chapter 26

“I’m telling you I knowwhat I saw!” Brit said, as she scrubbed the last oversized pot that had held the potatoes. Turing away from the sink, she shook the steel wool at Desi. “He looked so sad when you left!”

They were clearing the mess of having to feed not 120 people like everyone had thought but 200 and were halfway through when Brit brought it up.

Desi just shook her head. “He was probably sad cuz he thought I burnt the food.”

“Whatever. You believe what you want to, but I know the truth. That man has it bad for you.”
