Desi laughed but felt like crying inside. Brit couldn’t be more wrong if she tried.

“That meal was fabulous Desi!” Abbi walked into the room followed by Ben.

Ben smiled, reaching into his pocket. “Yes, it was. I wasn’t sure you would be able to pull it off, but you did an amazing job.”

“Thank you both, it means a lot. I did have help though, everyone pitched in.”

“Well, all the same, this is for you.” He passed her a folded piece of paper, then walked over to Brit and Jasmine and handed them each one.

Brit stuffed hers in her pocket, while Jasmine unfolded hers, her eyes widened as she said, “This is a check for $1000.00? Why? I hardly did anything”

“Oh, you never mind,” Abbi waved a hand at the teen, “You all deserve it.”

Desi looked down at the paper in her hands and remembered that she still had the other check in her purse, waiting to be deposited. Opening it she couldn’t believe her eyes. It was more than the agreed upon amount. She was expecting a check for $5000.00. What she held in her hands was one for $20,000.00. Desi shook her head. “I can’t accept this...”

“Yes, you can,” Ben said. “You brought my wife back to me. That’s the least that I can do.”

Kim waltzed into the room just then. “You might as well stop right there,” she hiccupped into her glass. “They ain’t gonna take no for an answer.”

Desi smiled, “Haven’t we had this conversation before?”

“We certainly did. Now.” Desi noticed Kim must have been in the sauce, she was looking a little glazed in the eyes as she pointed at Brit and Jasmine. Sweeping a hand across the room, she said, “Leeave this shtuf for the morning. Go get changed and come out to partaay!” she fist pumped the air and gyrated her hips.

Everyone burst out laughing as she left the room and Abbi wiped a hand across her brow, “Sorry about that, she’s a little tipsy.”

“She’s right though.” Ben looked at them and grinned, “You heard her ladies. Go change and come outside. We have the heaters running so it’s not too cold.”

Abbi pushed the swinging door open and held it for Ben, “Don’t be too long, Lane is going to start dancing very soon, you won’t want to miss that.”

Desi nodded and smiled, “We will be there in a few.” As soon as the door swung shut, she frowned. Dancing? Lane? He never mentioned it to her.

“Can you imagine him in ballet tights?” Jasmine said.

Desi murmured absently, “With the size of his shlong he better be wearing a tutu.”

She clamped a hand over her mouth, horrified at what just slipped out of it.

Brit and Desi looked at each other in stunned silence, then burst out laughing, when Jasmine asked, “What’s a shlong?”

After getting changed and making themselves presentable, the three of them went out the patio and sat down at an empty table. Tiny lights sparkled in the night around the seating area, making it hard for Desi to scan the crowded dance floor in search of Lane. Somewhat disappointed, she sat back in her chair, wanting to go home. She looked at Brit to tell her that was exactly what she was going to do, when she noticed her looking at a point above her head, grinning.

“Look at these two handsome devils,” she sighed.

Desi twisted around in her chair, to see Luke and Lane standing directly behind her.

“When someone is holding a finger to their lips, it means you aren’t supposed to say anything,” Luke grinned. Tapping Desi on the shoulder, he handed her a glass of wine and said, “I just want to tell you that I could eat your food every day for the rest of my life and not get sick of it.” He dropped to his knees and said, “Will you marry me?”

Lane shot his brother a dark look as Desi burst out laughing. “I’m sorry to have to say this but I have to respectfully decline.”

Luke stood up and said, “Hey, it was worth a shot, right?”

“Wrong,” Lane growled as he took Desi’s hand in his. “Walk with me?”

“To where?”

“Does it matter?”

Everyone at their table was watching the exchange between them; the tension was so thick that the air seemed to crackle.
