“Yes, he is,” she said. “And the sooner you get on his back the faster we can get a move on. The blood moon is in less than a week’s time.”

Grabbing the horn with both hands and vetoing the stirrup, I swung my body up and onto it’s back. Feeling proud of myself for defeating the bastard, I grinned at her as I settled in the saddle and asked, “What does the blood moon have to do with this?”

She sat there looking ahead like she was made of stone.

I clenched the reins in my hand. “Ava, what does the blood moon have to do with this?”

She inhaled deeply than turned her soul piercing eyes on me. “According to the scroll all tasks must be completed by then, otherwise Satan will unleash all his powers on the living.”

I squinted and shook my head. “What about God, where does he fit into all of this? Does he not have a say... I mean he is the ruler of all.” I ducked as the Jackass let out a braying protest. “No offense Satan,” I added, because I was still entirely convinced, I was sitting on the dark lord’s back.

“It’s his idea.” And with that, she nudged her horse into a trot.

––––––––

WE TRAVELLED THROUGHthe blistering snow along the highway until darkness fell and we came upon an all-night diner. A motel that looked like it was right out of the 80’s, neon sign and all flashing ‘Vacancy’ sat behind it.

Ava looked over her shoulder at me, her voice carried on the wind to my ears as she said, “We stay here for the night.”

Nodding, I followed her into the snow filled parking lot that clearly hadn’t seen a plow, then climbed out of the saddle. I stood for a moment to let my legs stretch out, eyeing my surroundings. “What do we do with these guys?”

Bones jumped off the sleigh and trotted to Ava’s side as she too climbed off her horse. “Go in and get us a table,” she said. Taking her backpack out of the sleigh she turned and headed to the entrance of the motel.

I stopped her by taking hold of her shoulder. “Ava, we can’t just leave them out here to freeze. They need shelter.”

“You mean that shelter?” She jutted her chin towards the far end of the motel.

I looked and out of nowhere a barn with the door propped open materialized out of nothing.

“That was not there a second ago. Did you make that—”

“Yeah. I did. Now go take them inside while I get us a room. Come on Bones.”

I stood a moment watching her walk away. A dark figure in the snowy night, gliding to the motel entrance. With her hooded cape flowing behind her in the wind all she needed was a scythe in her hand and she could pass off as...

“Sonofabitch.”

Satan had called her Thanatos, the Greek God better known as the Grim Reaper. Grabbing the reins of our rides I watch as she entered the motel. Slowly I made my way towards the barn wondering how I could have been so blind. I had to know what was going on in that pretty head of hers and what drove her to practice black magic in the first place.

I knew she had been adopted. Her birth mother never wanted anything to do with her had tossed her in one of those Safe Haven baby boxes back in Indiana where she’d been born. That alone would affect anyone, but Ava never seemed bothered by it. If anything, she was always thankful that she’d been adopted by a prominent family in California at the age of nine or at least she said she was. Whatever it was that drove her to the dark side, I had to find out....
