Chapter 8

AVA

––––––––

“THAT’LL BE EIGHTY BUCKS. The mutt can’t stay though.” The hotel clerk said, looking at me over his wire rimmed glasses.

I snapped my fingers and a credit card appeared between the tips of them.

“How... how did you do that?”

I shrugged and lied. “I’m a magician. And the dog stays with me.”

“No can do.” Without taking his eyes off me, he pointed to the sign over his shoulder that read, ‘No mutts allowed.’ “See it says—”

No one was calling my dog a mutt. I looked at him and gave him the death stare. I watched in fascination as his eyes started bulging as he saw his future demise while I searched the recess of his mind. He was a nasty man that got his jollies off from making others miserable. But he wasn’t evil. He was safe from me... for now.

“You were saying?” I asked sweetly as I retreated.

“I... I’ll make an exception this once.” He stuttered, snatching the plastic card from my fingers.

“Mhm, thought so.” I lifted my chin and looked down my nose at him. “You know you should be a bit kinder to people.”

A nervous laugh sputtered past his lips as he said, “What do you mean?”

“Oh, you know exactly what I mean.” I nodded.

Without hesitation he started to quickly process the transaction. As he did, I glanced around the room and saw a chair with a small table beside it. A box of chocolate bars sat upon it asking for donations to some local charity and I decided I wanted one.

But a flash of headlights at the window caught my eye and I watched as a truck with huge tires, the kind that little men with small dicks drive, came plowing through the snow then skidded to a stop just outside the restaurant. Sure enough, the little pecker jumped down from the driver’s seat and stormed inside.

The sound of keys clattering to the counter had me turning back.

“Sign here.” He said sliding a sheet of paper and a pen at me then laid my credit card beside it.

I could have just signed it with a wave of my hand, but from the smell that was coming from the other side of the counter, I thought I’d save him the embarrassment of shitting his pants. Picking up the pen I scribbled my name, collected the card, and snatched up the keys. Glancing at the tag, I looked at him and grinned. “Room 13... how appropriate.”

Turning to go, I was stopped by the sound of him clearing his throat. Looking back at him I waited until he was ready to speak.

“I don’t want no trouble here.” He licked his lip. “And you said to be kinder...”

“Yes?”

“That guy that just got out of the pickup a few minutes ago. Stay clear of him. He’s evil that one.”

I smiled like the Cheshire cat. “You don’t say? Don’t you worry about me. I can take care of myself.” Snagging the box of chocolate bars from the table I called to Bones and made my way towards the door.

“Hey, you can’t just take those!”

Pushing the door open, I laughed. “Not very observant, are you? Look at the counter.”

I chuckled as I made my way to room 13, knowing full well the man was standing there scratching his head trying to figure out how he missed me tossing the hundred-dollar bill down.

Bones whined at my side, and I looked up to see Noah heading towards us, head bent against the wind with his bag strapped to his back. He looked like he was frozen as he fell in step beside me.
