Chapter 9

NOAH

––––––––

ITURN ON THE TAPSand wait forever for the hot water to kick in. Finally, when it does, I strip down and leave the bathroom door open, in hopes that Ava will join me once she gets back with the food. Singing my way through five songs and shrivelled up like a grape that’s been left out in the hot summer sun, I shut the water off. They must be backed up in the kitchen at the restaurant.

I grab a towel and wrap it around my waist and make my way back to the bed where my clothes are laid out waiting for me. When I reach for the pants is when Bones who was sleeping soundly on the blankets, sits up and starts growling... at me. Sweat beads on my brow when he shows his fangs at me. “Hey buddy, take it easy.” I say it in a calm soothing tone but I’m far from calm, I’m just about shitting bricks when he jumps off the bed and bounds to the door. The quick feeling of relief is only momentary. Because he then starts to paw at the door, wanting to get out. Thinking he’s the one that’s going to have the green apple splatters at any second, I quickly pull my clothes on and let him out. I watch as he races through the snow, directly to the restaurant and it’s in that moment I know Ava is in trouble.

Stuffing my feet into my boots I snatch my coat off the hook behind the door, pulling it on as I step out into the blizzard like conditions. Something stops me though. It’s the sound of a harp strumming. Ducking my head back into the room, the weapons that Satan sent us, are glowing red hot. Without another thought, I scoop them up and slam out of the room. Scaling over snowdrifts in the parking lot, I push through the doors of the restaurant as Bones darts past me and I walk into a room full of utter chaos.

Ava is in the middle of it, swirling around with a pool cue in her hand, whacking heads with it as she does. Six guys drop to their knees only for them to pop back up and advance on her again. And then that’s when things got ugly.

Bones joined in the melee. Going for the throat of the one closest to her, the Doberman wasted no time sinking his fangs into the man’s skin.

“Bones, stand down,” Ava yelled as she whipped her head to look at me, and the dog at once let go, but not before biting the guy on the leg.

She bent low, and with one hand outstretched to me, she called the staff to her side. The thing shot right out of my arms and landed in the palm of her hand with loud slap. She swung it around and the men fell like dominos. This time they stayed put; they had no choice. From the staff, six fiery ropes that snapped like a crackling campfire, imprisoned them upon the floor.

Ava stood and raised her arms, one in my direction, the other, at a man that was standing there, frozen to the spot with piss running down the front of his jeans. I would come to realize after, that Ava had total control over him.

“Damnations Kiss, come to me,” Ava said. The sword flew out of my arms just like the staff had done. Spinning end over end, the hilt landed perfectly in her hand. Turning around, she looked at it, testing the weight of it as her eyes fell upon the man.

“So, Duke... you were saying?”

“What the fuck are you? Get the fuck away from me!” Duke shouted.

Ava made a tsking sound. “Oh, come on now Duke. You had to have known that one day this day would come, given your past... decisions shall I say?”

“Do you know who I am?” Duke spat.

Ava pressed her lips together and shook her head. “Don’t care.”

“You’re not even from around here, you have no idea what I’ve done in the past.”

“Well see, that’s where you’re wrong.” She took a step towards him and stopped within arms reach. “I know exactly what you’ve done, let me refresh your memory...”
