She grinned at me. “Take Bones and go back to the room. I’ll be there as soon as the food is done.”

And with that she turned, headed to the old man and sat down beside him, chatting to him like they were old friends.

Chapter 10

AVA

––––––––

IMADE MY WAY BACKthrough the snow, clutching the bag of burgers in my hand not wanting to face Noah.

I knew from the look on his face back in the bar, he had a hundred questions and would want them answered tonight. I was exhausted and talking was the last thing on my mind. Taking the souls of others was always a mental drain, one that I hated doing. You would think after ten years of doing it, my body and mind would be used to it, but neither were.

Stopping outside of our room, I took a deep breath before entering. I quietly open the door in hopes he’s asleep to find Bones was lying in the middle of the bed, his ears perked up when I entered, and Noah was nowhere to be seen. Setting the bag on the table by the window, I pulled two cans of Pepsi from my pockets and set them down before I walked across the room to the bathroom door and tapped on it.

“Foods here,” I said.

The door flung open, and he stood there, staring me down. He’s pissed. “We need to talk.” He pulls me by the arm over to the table and points at one of the chairs. “Sit!”

Call it being tired or the need to spill my guts to him once and for all, but if it had been anyone other than Noah, I would be the only breathing human in the room now.

He picks the paper sack up off the table and digs out the burgers before sitting in the opposite chair. Without a word he unwraps one and takes a generous bite. “Eat,” he said around the mouthful of food.

I lean back in the chair and look at him. “Do you want answers or not?”

“Eat first than we will talk.”

Despite being tired, I did what he said, it was the least that I owed him, an explanation to what he just witnessed. I unwrapped the burgers that I had ordered for Bones and called him over, giving him one before starting on my own.

“Ava, what the hell was that?”

“I thought you wanted to eat first?” I asked, looking into his stormy eyes.

“We can eat and talk how about that?”

I nod and unwrap the second burger for Bones, I hand it to my dog and then say, “What do you want to know?”
