He threw a hand in the air. “Everything. I want to know why or how you started magic in the first place. What made you decide to practice it and why it turned dark. I also want to know how much of what I witnessed was magic or just the fact that you’re the... a—”

I raise my brows and grin. “Grim Reaper?”

I jump from the sound of his fist hitting the table. “This isn’t funny Ava!”

I lean forward. “Did I say it was? Do you have any idea what it’s like to kill people even those that deserve it? Of course, you don’t! So don’t you dare sit there and judge me!”

“I’m not judging I just need to know... everything.”

I nod. “Okay.” Taking the last bite of my burger, I scrunch up the wrapper and toss it into the bag before taking a can of Pepsi. I crack it open and guzzle half of it, wishing it were a bottle of vodka instead.

I carefully set the can on the table, like it’s taking all my focus to do so and then look at him.

“From the beginning. I was fifteen when I found out the reason my birth mother wanted nothing to do with me. She herself was a witch and thought by giving me up that the dark powers wouldn’t take me like they did her.”

“Dark powers? What do you mean by that? Dark magic can overtake you, is that what you mean?”

“More or less. Practicing dark magic can overtake you, but I believe she thought something eviler was after her.”

“You mean Satan?”

I shook my head. “Worse.” Pushing myself out of the chair, I walked over to the bureau that my sack sat on and fumbled for the hidden pocket that I knew was there. Pulling out a worn and tearstained letter, I crossed back to the room and handed it to Noah before taking my seat again.

He opened it and as he began to read, the words echoed through my mind as I had read those same words a thousand times.

My dearest Evangelina, I know you are wondering why I as a mother could just abandoned my only baby. It’s because my dear sweet one, it’s the only way I can protect you from the evil that shrouds me. It’s hounding presence seeps into my pores and for the life of me no spell or curse can lift it. I send you away so that it’s evil clawing clutches can never find you. Should it ever, know that the only way to protect yourself is turning to the occult. There you will find ways to protect yourself that I could never do.

Noah looked from the page to me. “First off, I never knew your name was Evangelina.”

A chuckle slips past my lips, like that was the most important thing he gleaned from the letter.

“Apparently yes.”

Sliding the letter towards me, he said, “So, what is this evil that had consumed her so much?”

“Truthfully, I think it was the man she was living with before she died. An abusive one.”

He rubbed the stubble along his jaw line. “What makes you say that?”

I lift my shoulders in a shrug.

He leans back in his chair. “How can a man be eviler than Satan?”

“Any human who claims to love you that is a narcissistic, gaslighting, abusive piece of shitiseviler than Satan. At least with Satan one knows where they stand.”

He looked taken aback as he pointed to the letter. “I never was like that to you so why did you feel the need to start with the dark magic?”

Needing to put some distance between his prying eyes, eyes that I could feel myself start drowning in, I stood up and walked over to the bed. Sitting down, I busied myself by taking my boots off. Something I should have done the second I stepped in the room.

“No Noah, you were never like that. And that’s why I fell in love with you.”

“Then Ava why? Was it just something you wanted to experiment with?”

“Not at all. Remember the day that I came home with the black eye, and I told you I tripped and hit my cheek?”

He nodded without saying a word, but I could tell from the flash of anger on his face he knew that wasn’t what happened. Just like he did back then he didn’t pry.

I stood and took my cape off followed by my coat. Tossing them onto the chair I vacated, I walked over to him. Turning around, I lift my hair. “Unzip me, will you?”
