Chapter 13

NOAH

––––––––

AFTER STUFFING THEtrailer that Ava had conjured while we were shopping and stuffing every available spot in the Land Rover, including around Bones, poor dog all you could see was his head poking out, we were headed down the road towards the border crossing. “Well, I bet that was a first. Not everyone charges fifteen grand on a credit card at a gas station. Where did you say we were going again?”

Ava grinned at me. “Nope, I’m sure they haven’t. And I didn’t. We are headed just north of the Canadian border to a small town called Cotton Springs.”

I chanced a look at her face and saw worry etched on it. “What are we in for once we get there?”

“Honestly, I don’t know. The wolf only showed me what to prepare for when we get there.”

From the grip she had on the bag in her lap, I knew she was hiding something from me. Turning the signal light on, I pulled over to the shoulder.

She pointed out the windshield. “The border crossing is up there.”

“Yeah, it is.” Throwing the gearshift into park I turned in my seat and looked at her. “Why didn’t you conjure the trailer full of the supplies instead of buying them?”

She sighed. “Believe it or not, my magic does have limits. Or I do anyway.” She shrugged. “I get tired.”

“Liar. You’re preserving your strength...why?”

“Fine if you must know we are going to a tented city where the homeless are currently living... It’s a mercy mission.”

“What?! Mercy for whom, Ava?”

“The dying ones... and there’s a lot of them. I’ll need all my powers. They aren’t going to hell, they’re going to heaven, and it takes more out of me sending them there.”

“Why? I would think it would be the other way around.”

“Because heaven is further away and with everyone that is on their way out, my soul must take them there before I can return to my physical body. Now can we please get a move on? At this rate, they will all end up as ghosts and that will be your fault.”

Without a word I pulled back onto the road and headed for the little building that separated the two countries.

“One more question?” I asked, needing to know the answer for some reason before we crossed over.

She rolled her eyes and looked at me. “Yes?”

“Why can’t you just guide them once they become a ghost?” Even to my own ears I sounded like an idiot.

“If I don’t get there in time to guide them to the after world they become ‘ghosts’ in this dimension which is a parallel universe to this one. In that universeweare the ghosts, and they are the living. Living a new life possibly causing chaos in that realm.”

I laugh as we pull up to the border kiosk. “Yeah, you lost me.”

“The world is full of assholes already. My job is to get to them before they can continue being bigger assholes in another realm. However, the one’s at this tented city were dealt a horrible hand in life and just need help on their way out.”

I put my window down and smile at the officer as he stuffs his head inside the car. Clearly this guy didn’t know about personal space. “Can I help you?” I ask.
