“Welcome to Canada. What is your destination, how long will you be here, and do you have any contraband in your vehicle?”

My mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water before I finally said, “Ah... we are on business.”

I could feel Ava flinch beside me before she leaned over, holding her hand out. “Hello there officer.” She snapped her fingers and a card appeared. “Here is my business card... it explains all.”

I took a quick glance at it as it passed between the two of them and saw that it was blank. Imagine my surprise when the officer took it and started reading it. I know because I followed his eye movement.

“Right.” He nodded. “You two enjoy your stay.”

I watched in awe as the man left and walked over to the wall of the building and pushed a button, that lifted the gate in front of us.

Shaking my head, I said, “I’m not even going to ask. Just tell me which way to drive.”

“Head straight for twenty minutes than turn right. The town is fifteen minutes from this highway.”

Both lost in our thoughts, we silently made our way to the destination.

“Where should I park?” I asked, looking at the sea of tents. There had to be over a hundred of them.

“Pull up to that empty clearing. There’s plenty of room for what I need to do.”

Knowing I would find out soon enough for what she had planned I pulled into it and turned the car off. “Now what?”

“Now we get to work.” She opened her door and got out and I did the same. Moving to the other side of the vehicle I could hear a baby crying and people coughing. An ominous feeling of dread hung over the encampment as I joined her on the other side of the vehicle.

“What do you need me to do?” I whispered, for fear of waking up those that somehow managed to sleep in the freezing temperatures.

“Just stand back and watch for anyone attempting to approach me. Don’t let them touch me.” She moved to the center of the clearing and looked to the sky, raising her arms, her eyes rolled back in her head and for a minute there, I was going to be the one to touch her. Thinking she was having a seizure I took a step forward then stopped.

A shimmery beam came down from the heavens and spread out around her. Just like back in the bar in Wyoming things started righting themselves. A store appeared behind her, from nothing and every bag we had stuffed into the trailer and the car, flew inside and started filling the shelves. Once it was completed and everything in its place, she collapsed onto the ground.

“Help me Noah...”

I jumped to her side and gathered her in my arms. “Are you okay? What I do I need to do?”

“Nothing, I just need a minute.”

“Stop doing this Ava. There must be people out there that can help them.”

Her little fists grabbed my coat, and she looked me in the eyes. “They are the ones who put them here in the first place. They aren’t going to help. They want these people to suffer and die.”

She moved to stand, and I held onto her waist as she steadied herself. “Can you look in my bag and grab a chocolate bar for me please?”

I hurried over to the open door and looked into her backpack. There had to be fifty chocolate bars inside. “What kind?”

She shook her head, as she put a hand to her stomach. “Doesn’t matter.”

Taking two, I ripped open the package and handed it to her and watched as she devoured both in less than a minute.

“Uh... you want something to wash that down?”

She laughed. “Sorry I get a little peaked when I have to do such a monumental task.”

I handed her a bottle of water and waited until she polished it off. “I kinda feeling useless. Like I’m your go boy or something.”

She wiped her mouth with the back of her sleeve. “Well, there’s not much you can do really. Just stand guard. I suspect that someone will be showing up any moment.”

“Who?” I look around as if there is a creeper coming up from behind me.
