Bones jumped back into the room, and she closed the door then headed to his bag of food. I looked at her as she filled his bowl and could tell she was thinking of ways to deal with the man. Setting it down beside the bowl of water, she patted him on the head and watched as he dug in. When she was satisfied that he was happy, she turned towards the table that held her weapons.

I sucked in a breath. “Ah... Bringing him here is probably not a good idea.”

“No, I agree.” She said, strapping the sword and staff to her back. Slipping on her cape, she held out her hand to me. “Come on let’s go.”

To say I was overjoyed at the gesture, was an understatement. She made me feel like a million bucks just by letting me take her hand out in public. Together we walked to the dining room and the kitchen staff was setting up a spread fit for a king.

An older lady saw us and said, “Morning folks, we aren’t quite ready yet, but if you’d like to get yourself a cup of coffee and find a seat, you’re more than welcome to!”

“Absolutely!” Ava smiled in return. “The coffee smells divine.”

We walked over to the carafe that held the brew and each took a cup, filling it to the brim.

“Where do you want to sit?” I asked, glancing around the room.

She jutted her chin towards the wall of windows that gave a clear view of the entrance to the dinning area. “Over there. Anyone of them will do.”

We made our way over to a table for two and sat down watching the staff go to and fro to the kitchen carrying laden filled dishes to the serving tables. I took a sip of my coffee as other hotel guests started arriving. Setting it down, I murmured out of the side of my mouth, “Do you have any clue what this guy looks like?”

She raised her head, looking around an elderly couple and shook her head. “The only thing I’ve got to go on is he’s a dick and will be surrounded by more dicks.” She looked at me and grinned.

I nodded and looked at her. “Sounds easy enough. So, what’s your plans?” I had to ask because if she was wanting me to strum the bow again, I might as well just head back to the room now and get it. I could serenade the other patrons while they ate their breakfast.

I noticed her eyes darkened, and I looked to where she was. An entourage walked it with the cockiest looking bastard I ever laid eyes on. Roughly six feet tall, my height, wearing a black suit that looked to cost more than I had made in a month as a computer programmer. They headed directly to the buffet and started filling their plates.

Ava slapped her coffee cup down on the table so hard I thought she broke it. She made a great show of looking flustered as the hot coffee spilled onto her hand. I went to get up to get some napkins, but she planted her hand atop of mine and smiled. “Let me.”

I watched as she made a beeline for the table that held the plates and napkins. Once there, she took a handful and purposely dropped them onto the floor. A few of the men that had come in with D. K. turned and helped her pick them up. She sent them a dazzling smile and then said something to one of them, who in turn grabbed a hold of her arm. I start to push myself out of my seat then sat back down. I realized she had it all under control as he handed her his empty plate then bowed back, allowing her to butt in line. Right behind the man himself, D. K. Sterling.

I leaned back in my chair and crossed my arms. After what she had done last night, helping the people of the tented city, I knew I was in for one hell of a show.

AVA

“Oh, my goodness I’m so clumsy this morning,” I said, making sure I sounded flustered. I knew that there had to be a few somewhat good guys in this goon squad and sure as shit, three of them came to my aide.

“Here you go miss,” a blonde man said, handing me the stack of napkins they had collected from the floor. “How’s your hand? It looked like that coffee got you pretty good.”

I genuinely smile at his thoughtfulness, and say, “It’s stinging a little bit, I’m sure it will be fine. Whoa!” I purposely swayed and fluttered my eyelashes.

He grabbed onto my arm, holding me to the spot. “Are you alright? You’re looking a little pale. Here, get yourself some food. Maybe that will help.”

I took the plate he had shoved at me and got in line right behind D. K. and said, “Oh look at all this scrumptious food.”—picking up a pair of tongs, I selected a muffin off a plate and held it — “Doesn’t it make your tummy rumble?” I nudged him with my elbow and looked up at him.

He was looking down at me with a scowl. Perfect...

My eyelids became heavy as we gazed at each other. I always got that feeling when I was dealing with a human that was pure evil. One that wouldn’t think twice about throwing his own mother to the wolves if he thought he could make a buck off it.

“This muffin is especially for you,” I said, sitting it upon his food laden plate. “You will eat ever crumb of it. Do you understand?”

He nodded dumbly at me and looked down at the single black berry shining on the top of it. “It’s beautiful lady.”

“Yes, it is.”

He then turned, walked over to a large table in the center of the room and sat down. I quickly filled my plate and then snagged another before heading back to our table.

“Here.” I handed Noah his plate and the napkins before sitting down.
