“You gave him a muffin?” he asked, his lowered to just above a whisper.

I picked up my fork and dug into my food. “Mhm, with a beautiful lady sitting right on top of it.” I stabbed some scrambled eggs and popped the fork into my mouth and sighed as the buttery goodness flooded by taste buds. “Did you try these eggs?” I asked wiping my mouth with a napkin.

“Not yet. Um, what’s a ‘beautiful lady’?”

“Sorcerer’s cherries, Witches’ berries or the more common name, Belladonna.”

Thoughtfully, he bit into a slice of toast, then asked, “Will it,” — he made a slicing motion across his neck— “you know?”

“Kill him?” I asked, taking a sip of my coffee. He nodded.

“No. I will be.”

Chapter 18

NOAH

––––––––

WE HAD BEEN DONE EATINGfor the past fifteen minutes and sat there drinking our coffee to the chagrin of the kitchen staff. For the tenth time, the older lady had looked at us, waiting for the second we lifted our asses off the chairs so she could clear the table.

“She’s doing it again,” I mutter out the side of my mouth.

“That she is,” Ava tapped the table then waved her hand in the woman’s direction. She visibly jolted and grabbed her ass. She looked around for the culprit that just goosed her and when she found none, she hightailed it to the kitchen.

I laughed and leaned towards Ava. “Kiss me?”

“My pleasure.” She laid her hand on my cheek then locked lips with me. The gasps from the other diners fell on deaf ears as Ava deepened the kiss and I was so ready to take her right there on the table. But the sound of a clattering dishes vetoed that idea. Pulling away, she murmured against my lips. “That’s my cue.” She turned my face to the table that we had been stalking for the past hour. “The show is about to begin.”

D. K. Sterling pushed away from the table, a stormy look brewing on his face. “I didn’t call you all here for you to say no,” he yelled. “This mine cannot come to fruition without big bucks. Your big bucks.”

“What’s the belladonna going to do to him?” I murmured against her ear.

The shudder running through her body when the heat of my breath fanned on her did not go unnoticed by me. “For a man his size, not much. But he will be fully aware I’m there for him.” She pointed to the table. “Now shush and listen.”

I turn my attention back to see D. K. stopped in the middle of having a hissy fit to stuff the uneaten portion of his muffin into his mouth. “Hank! You’re in, aren’t you?”
