Chapter 3

The cabin in JacksonHole, Wyoming, is a quaint and cozy log house nestled among tall pine trees and surrounded by a blanket of snow. I love it here, despite it being colder than a witch’s teat compared to the fiery depths of Hell, I was slowly adjusting to the icy chill of the surface world.

We were no sooner in the house and Bones wanted back outside. I can’t say that I don’t blame him. It’s like he knows he has a new lease on life as he races through the snowdrifts, barking at squirrels. I, on the other hand, am staring out of the window, lost in thought.

I knew Satan had sent me here for a reason, and while I had agreed to the mission, I still wasn't entirely sure what was expected of me. All I knew was that it involved weapons with powers and to eradicate all that was evil. Which is insane considering my boss is the devil.

Speaking of which, he still hadn’t sent my instructions or the weapons. I walk over to the door and open it calling for the dog when a sudden flash of light bursts through the clouds. It looked like a shooting star, but it streaked across the daytime sky. It’s so bright that I have to shield my eyes and it makes me wonder if it’s some kind of omen. With a weary eye, I call in Bones and he scampers into the house, without a second to spare, I slam the door shut, sending the deadbolt home.

Grabbing a towel, I wipe the snow off his feet and look in his soulful eyes. “Are you hungry boy?”

He woofed, a good sign that he was, and I hung the towel on a hook by the door. “Come on, let’s see if there is any food for us.”

He beat me to the kitchen and stood beside the fridge, waiting patiently for me to open it. “Here goes nothing,” I muttered. With a hope and a prayer, I opened the door and was pleasantly surprised to see it fully stocked. Setting a carton of eggs on the counter I added a block of cheese and a pound of bacon. “Tonight, we eat like kings,” I smiled at the pooch as I pulled a bowl from the cupboard. “Scrambled eggs and bacon it is. Now to find a frying pan.”

MEANWHILE, THE FALLENangel who had been unceremoniously dropped from his hammock was now in the middle of a snow-covered meadow. Coughing and sputtering, he sat there looking around at his surroundings.

“What the hell just happened?” I scrunch my brow and grab my arm. “And why the hell do I hurt all over?”

A sudden blast of snow smacks me in the face and God’s voice booms. “Because of your mouth. And you’re needed there, she needs you there.”

I spin around on my ass, looking heavenward and yell, “Who?! Who needs me here?”

“Head north, you will find a cabin on the edge of a forest. There, you will find her.”

I look northward and see the cabin off in the distance. From where I’m sitting it looks like a speck of dust. “Couldn’t you have aimed a bit better?” I mutter to myself.

“I heard that...”

“Of course you did!” I struggle to my feet.

“Better get a move on Noah,” God said.

“Yeah.” Another voice chimes in. “It will be dark soon and the coyotes are hungry.”

“Who the hell is that?” I ask looking up at the sky.

“Just you never mind. Now get going. We will send instructions once you arrive.”

“Fine. It better be worth it,” I mumble, getting my bearings.

Once I set out, I can’t help but notice the beauty of the landscape around me. The snow-covered mountains in the distance, the crisp winter air, and the silence are a reminder of how much I missed the land of the living. Only problem is, I’m freezing my ass off.
