She giggled. “Ah sure.”

“I think it’s your mother.”

She stopped laughing and sat there thinking. “You know something, I think you’re right.”

Chapter 20

NOAH

––––––––

AVA WAS SLEEPING SOUNDLYin the backseat with Bones in her arms and had been for the past ten hours, after she had put an awakening spell on me. I asked her why she couldn’t just teleport us instead of the long drive ahead, she simply said that she wouldn’t have enough power in her to face what was to come. Reluctantly I agreed. The effects were instantaneous, and I felt like I could drive to China and back without any shut eye. Now the problem I was having was the weather.

We were an hour away from our destination and the storm clouds that had been brewing since the sun had risen over the horizon were now unleashing their blanket of snow. Turning on the windshield wipers did nothing and I feared that I would have to pull over sooner rather than later and wake her something I didn’t want to do.

She saved me the trouble. She let out a loud yawn and I glanced in the rearview mirror to see her stretching before she joined me in the front.

“Wow, it’s really coming down out there, isn’t it?” She said buckling up her seatbelt.

“Yeah, I was thinking I should wake you up. I’m having a hard time seeing the road.”

She snatched up the map and started looking at it then glanced at the digital display of the clock. “That’s because for the past hour you have been driving on the largest lake in Canada.”

I tapped the brakes like that would do anything and looked at her “What the hell did you just say?! We could fall through at any moment!”

“Yeah, it’s frozen.” She grinned at me. “Didn’t it make you wonder why you saw no other traffic?”

“That thought crossed my mind, yes, but I just figured we were the only idiots that would drive in minus -13° F! Do you have any idea how cold that is?”

“Yeah, cold enough to freeze a lake. We are fine, it’s the only way to get to the mountains.” She peered out the windshield and pointed. “See there they are now.”

Sure enough, I could just make them out standing ominous in the near distance.

“See what looks like a cave there?” She pointed. “Head towards it.”

I did and with dawning horror I realized she wanted me to drive right into the side of the mountain. “Ahhh.... Ava? What do I do?”
