Chapter One

Daphne

Bones. Bones are what I know. Bones tell the story of everyone who comes in here. They are my safe place. Something that never changes. Well, unless they come to me in pieces. Or even melted from acid. But the basis of them is the same. Elmer’s is my savior for the brokenness of some bones. I look up from the skull that I am gluing together. How has this happened? Bones like this don’t show up on accident. How did this person end up in here, shattered in a million pieces? Who would do something like this?

I grasp my tweezers in my right hand and grab another piece. Trying to decipher where it goes, I land on the frontal lobe of the skull. Holding the glue and putting a tiny dot on the piece, I place it on my never-ending puzzle.

“Why are you still here?”

I jump up and almost drop the person’s skull. I look at the person who has intruded on my sanctuary.Archer. I look at him with disinterest. He’s in his blue tailored suit. Something that I have no idea how he affords on only a detective salary. I answer his absurd question, “The same thing you are doing here, Archer, trying to

solve this case. Now, please leave my lab. You are not welcome here.”

“Ah, come on Daph, you know I basically live here too. We are good roomies.”

I roll my eyes. “One, you are not doing the things to me that warrant you to give me a nickname. And two, we are not “roomies.” We simply work in the same place. Sadly.”

He looks at me with those grey eyes I can never really read. I grab the closest thing next to me and launch it at him. Luckily, it was just a roll of paper towels, not something sharper.

“Ow. Why the hell did you do that?” His eyes blazed, and he looked like he wanted to smash my bones into tiny pieces. “Because Archer, you are insufferable, and I need to get this done.”

“Well, you’re going to have to wait. There’s a meeting in the conference room.”

Why can no one leave me alone in this place? “Fine,” I say with my usual disinterest. “I’ll be right there.” I look back down to the skull. Archer finally walks towards the door, and as his back is to

me, I glance up to look at his muscular back, which is so noticeable in those suits. “I know you’re staring at me,” he says as he walks out.

I scream at him to shut up. Those God damn males always get on my nerves.

Archer

God, this woman drives me mad. She was just sitting there forever, oblivious to me being there. Her soft blue eyes never left the bone that she was configuring. Her hair was in a messy bun, the pink highlights sticking out everywhere.

I shake my head and look up at the screen in the conference room. I know there’s no meeting. I don’t know why I told her there was. I just needed to talk to her privately in a place without cameras. She will probably kill and shatter me into tiny pieces when she finds out there’s no meeting. She would get away with it, too, that smart-ass of a woman. I turn towards the door and cross my arms, waiting for the doorknob to turn. She walks in after ten minutes.

“You’re late,” I say to the woman staring straight at me.

“No one is here, so I would say I am early.” She quips back at me.

As if suddenly realizing what she just said, she gives me a look and says, “Where is this meeting that you made me leave my essential work for exactly?”

“Well, you didn’t really rush to get here, did you. There is no meeting. We need to talk.”

“Oh no, I am not talking to you. I have nothing to say.” She starts to turn around.

“Wait. Please don’t leave yet. I need to talk to you.” She looked at me like I had ten heads; all I could think about was how she would look with only her lab coat.

“What do you need?” She crosses her arms and gives me a piercing look.

“I need you.” I get up and slowly walk towards her. “I need you to get out of my head. I need to just get this over with.”

“Get what over” I stop her mid-sentence with a kiss, backing

her up against the door.

Daphne

Wow, this kiss is good. Wait. He’s kissing me. I push him away. “What the fuck do you think you are doing. Sexual harassment is not something that I figured I would be a victim of at three in the morning.”
