I have no idea how long I've been knocked out. We might not even be in the city anymore. I hear music from the cab; it's loud. Probably to muffle any of my screams and to not let me hear the outside world.

I'm crammed in here with nothing. They must've taken my purse. Damn it, I have a knife in there. I have to start wearing it on me when I go places. The car keeps going and then speeds up. Well, we are going on a thruway. I tried to map anything close to where I was. But I can't think while being in this metal box.

The person drives for ten minutes. And then the car stops suddenly. I hear footsteps on gravel; they are wearing some type of boots. I fake sleep, and the person opens the trunk. He grabs me, and I start to struggle once I'm out of the trunk. But he's too fast, almost like he knew I wasn't actually sleeping. He presses another towel to my face, and I'm pulled back into the unwanted darkness. I didn't even open my eyes to see where I was.

Chapter Seventeen

Archer

Monday morning, Nisa tells me I have a new case. Sexual assault of a senator's daughter. These are the cases that make my blood run cold. She's only thirteen; why do people do these kinds of things to children. She will be scarred for life; afraid of every man's touch. Nisa said we are keeping this on the low since the Senator is her friend.

I have to go talk to the girl, and it's the worst thing I have to experience every once in a while. I have to ask questions that I hate asking. I have to listen to the story of the victim with a straight face even though I'm seeing red on the inside. If it was my decision, the person wouldn't go to prison; he would go down in the river. Usually, I'm set in stone, but lately, it's been tipping. Especially seeing people being let out early for sexual assault crimes. It's not fair to victims, old and new.

I go to Nisa's office, knowing that she doesn't put victims in the interrogation rooms. She's compassionate when she needs to be. One of my favorite types of bosses. I need to get in the zone of recounting these memories. Completely disassociate, to not show my

anger for the person who did this. All I need is this little innocent girl to be scared of me.

I keep my phone on my desk for these types of things. I don't want any distractions between me and the victim. It's not proper to have your cell phone ring when someone is recounting their painful memories.

Taking up the elevator to Nisa's office, I should've let Daphne know that I'd be on this case for the majority of the day. To let her know she's welcome to come over when she is done with her work. I'll definitely be needing someone to cuddle during the night. To hold and keep safe from the dangers of the world. I get to Nisa's office, and I hear people talking on the inside. I knock on the door and hear Nisa shout, "Archer, come on in."

With that, I'm walking in. Entering, I see an interracial couple sitting on Nisa's couch. I recognize Senator Amelia Peters, and that must be her husband, Richard. On the chair next to the sofa is a little girl with glasses on. She looks like she has been crying. I look at Nisa. She gives me a slight nod.

I step up to greet the parents first. "Senator Peters and Mr. Peters, my name is Archer. I will be conducting the talk today. If that

is alright with you."

Mr. Peters talks first, "Yes, Nisa briefed us first on why she can't do it and that she has her best agent on the case."

I give them both a sad smile and move on to look at the girl who seems so small and scared in that seat.

"Hello, my name is Archer. Can you tell me yours?"

"Katherine, but everyone calls me Kat." She finally looks up at me, but she's still folding herself inward.

"Well, I'll call you Kat unless you have any objections to that." She shakes her head no. I sit in the chair across from her. Giving her a safe distance from me, who is basically a stranger. "Now, Kat, do you know why you're here today?" She nods her head yes. Well, that is the start of a long process.

"Do you want your parents in the room when we talk?"

The Senator speaks up, "Of course, she wants us in here. We are her parents."

"I completely understand, Senator. I just need to hear this wish from Kat herself." I look back at Kat.

She looks between me and her parents. "Can you… Can we actually just be alone? I'm… I'm sorry, but I don't know if I can

speak with you both here." She looks to her parents with hope in her

eyes. Hope that they will let her have this.

The Senator's eyes soften when looking at her daughter. No more ire in them when she looked upon me. "Yes, of course, sweetheart. I'm sure Nisa will show us where we can get you a wonderful donut to eat after this."

Nisa cuts in, "Well, duh, donuts are my specialty. Follow me."

Her parents follow Nisa outside. Mr. Peters looks warily at me. I know it must be hard to leave his daughter with a male, especially after what happened to her.

When I speak to victims, I never like to get right to the story. I want to build up their confidence and open them up a little bit.

"So, Kat, what's your favorite thing to do? Have any hobbies?"
