“I could have stopped you. Would have if I didn't want it so much.”

He chuckles, and the sound is delicious as it weaves around my heart.

“Roni, I have to admit, I’m very attracted to you.”

My body tingles like there’s a party happening inside, and all my lady parts are happy dancing. “I like you, too. In case you couldn't tell.”

“You don't know me. You don't know where I come from, whoI come from.”

“We all have histories, Drew.”

He drops his forehead to mine. “Yeah, well, mine is a little different.”

I'm not sure what he means by that, but clearly, it's something that bothers him. Maybe if he knows about my upbringing, he'll be willing to open up about his.

“My dad was a sports reporter. He wasn't around much when I was a kid, but I sure loved it when he was because he'd take me to work with him. That's where I got my love for both sports and photography. He bought me my first camera when I was three. I knew from that point on that I'd be the same as him when I grew up.”

Drew breaks our connection and pulls away to stare straight into my eyes.

“My dad loved sports, too. Only his love for games is how he wound up in jail, and I was left with a mother who struggled to make ends meet.”

Chapter6

Drew

The silence after that bombshell feels heavy. I squirm on the sofa, feeling the weight of Roni's gaze as she waits for me to continue. Her hazel eyes are fixed on mine, sending warmth through me that makes me feel strangely comforted. I raise up, ready to swing my legs around so I'm sitting instead of reclining.

She points at me. “You stay put. You're supposed to keep your leg elevated.”

“I would rather sit. And I think it would be more comfortable for both of us.”

“Okay. But if you start to feel any pain, then I want you to raise that leg again.”

“Promise.” I get settled, my bad leg stretched out in front of me, one arm along the back of the couch.

She's blushing. It's cute.“How about we order a pizza?” she asks.

A girl after my own heart. “Sure. Why not?”

“Any preferences?”

“No anchovies, onion or green pepper.”

“Pepperoni and cheese it is.” She grabs her phone off the table and pulls up a delivery service, stepping away to make the call. It's an open concept, so she doesn't go far.

“I like tomatoes. And mushrooms.”

She flashes me a quick look and grins. “Since I'm allergic to mushrooms, we'll go with pepperoni, cheese, and tomatoes.”

I slowly scour her apartment, taking in every detail as she puts in the order. The walls are painted in a light shade of blue. She's got a few photographs hanging on them, not sports, but scenery. I wonder if they're hers. She doesn't have a balcony, but a large window with various plants spread out along the sill. A home entertainment center sits along one wall with a television, a couple of shelves of books, more framed photos, and family pictures. I want to get up and look closer, but hopping around her apartment doesn't appeal to me right now. Frankly, I want to entice her to settle in next to me so I can kiss her again.

Outside, the sun is setting, the remaining yellow-orange glow seeping into the living space, creating late afternoon shadows.

“It will be here in about thirty minutes. Want some water?”

“Sure.”

She heads into her kitchen.”
