I work to compose myself. “Not much more to tell. When I got home, my mother was waiting with him. He looked fucking smug. She looked terrified. I told him to get the fuck out of our house.”
“I'm guessing that didn't go over well.”
“He hit me.”
She jerks upright and stares at me, her face filled with shock and outrage. “What?”
“Don't worry. He only got in one shot. Thankfully, my mom found a heavy frying pan and the courage to call the police. Turns out he'd robbed another store right after he got paroled. There was a warrant out for him already.”
“Is he still in jail?”
I shake my head. “I don't know where he is right now, and I don't care.” I'm sure he wouldn't try blackmailing me from behind bars. He tried that once and it only extended his sentence. “One of the reasons I don’t want you to sell those photos is I don’t want him knowing about you.”
“About me? What about me?”
Crap. I didn’t mean to say it like that. What if she’s not as into me as I’m into her? We’ve only known each other a very short time, and I’m ready to become invested in this woman. It doesn’t seem logical, but there you have it.
I deflect. “If he finds out you took some great photos, he’ll use that to get close to me. He’ll try to blackmail me. He’s tried before.”
“Where's your mother?”
“She died a few years ago.”
“I'm so sorry.”
“She was sick. She had a hard life. I never realized how hard until I hit my teens. I think my father's reappearance also put a strain on her.” Another thing he’s tried to blame me for when he’s reached out. I’ve always had the feeling she gave him money and now that she’s gone, he needs another bank.
Roni angles her body up so she can look me in the eye. “I promise I won't sell the pictures, Drew. Certainly not to your father. I don't want to do anything that might bring you any more pain.”
My throat chokes up, and I look at her through blurry eyes. I asked and pleaded with her, but I can’t believe she would care enough to make that promise. Maybe she does feel something for me.
“How about this?” she says. “I won't sell them. That's off the table. But I would like to use a couple of them in my personal portfolio if that's okay with you. There's a couple of them that I think really could be award winners.”
“Of course. Roni, honestly, I think you're being very generous.” I lean into her, pausing for a moment, giving her time to push me a way or say no. When she doesn’t, I press my lips against hers, keeping it soft and gentle, pulling back before things get out of control. “Thank you.”
We're staring into each other's eyes.
Her pupils dilate.
Her nose twitches.
With a finger tucked under her chin, I tip her head back and lower my mouth to hers again. God, she tastes so sweet. Sparks ignite between us, and I close my eyes. My erection strains against my jeans as pleasure rolls through my body.
Slipping my fingers beneath the hem of her shirt, I search until the pads of my fingers make contact warm supple flesh.The tension in my body melts away as I feel more vulnerable with her than I’ve ever been with anybody else.
Roni tightens her arms around me, her warm strength radiating through our connected bodies.
Our position isn't comfortable, but I'm scared to move, worried it will break the spell. Instead, I draw delicate lines along the curve of her back, down to the swell of her hips and thighs, right at the waistband of her leggings.
When I can't take it anymore, I break the kiss and lean back sucking in mouthfuls of air as I wrangle my shirt off, desperate to feel her skin against mine. “I want you, Roni. I want you naked. Please tell me you want that too.”
“I want that too,’ she breathes. She shimmies out of both her shirt and her bra, flinging both articles of clothing to the side.
A relieved groan spills from my lips and I flip her over and shuffle our bodies until she's pinned beneath me.
Her perky round breasts point up, inviting me to tease, taste and explore.I lightly pass one hand over her chest, her nipples scraping along my palm.
She shivers.
